Pfft, no big deal—I watched it too. Many people, myself included, see this contest as a kind of sports event, just with music. The most interesting part is watching the voting numbers roll in from each country.

Yeah, I'm not throwing any shade at people here, it's just that with my blood being Jewish-Italian (suspected in the former case, definite in the latter), my life is 50 % kitsch and 50 % histrionics and even then I find it all to be way too tacky.

I suppose there's also the instinctive knee-jerk reaction, because for my post-Commie soul this is way too much a reminder of the Ein Kessel Buntes Commie-era variety show that to me (and a lot of people I know) are to this day the absolute epitome of cringe.
But then again, the most popular singer in our country was Karel Gott, who was an archetypal example of an artist existing exactly for that purpose, so I realise I'm in the minority here.

I think my mindset is—yeah, I know it’s all very un-metal, kitschy, maybe even fake—but at the same time, it’s like: let’s play that anticipation game one more time. Maybe we’ll win :) It’s also a unifying event for all of Europe, happening live on TV. It’s not like I’m fully glued to the whole show; more like it’s playing in the background, and I crank up the volume when something actually catches my ear. And like I said, the fun part is seeing how people from other countries respond to your country’s song. Then come the resentment and bashing when 'they just don’t get it'—ha! But hey, it’s just a game, and I’m fully aware of that. No strings attached.

Yeah, it's more about it being a big event to gather around with friends and family. You have your home team, you have your favourites, and you talk about how bad these songs are. And unlike most sports events music is actually something we all at least like. We watched the freaking skateboarding competition in the Olympics, we aren't gonna watch the Eurovision? It's worth the cringe and the ear bleed. Also, the commentators here are hilarious.
