I doubt there's much to choose between them on that score. My guess would be that it originates with one particular incident which has since been lost to posterity. But you never know, something may surface again that will shed some light on it.

The first time I ever read Death Note, I read it until the Yotsuba arc and Light was far and above my favourite character. Then I finished the whole series and watched him slowly unravel in front of my eyes.
Then, slowly, due to a mix of realisation and relatability, I started liking L.
Now it's about 50-50.
