I have a power drill that can maim or kill yet I don't need to register it with anyone. Any tool can be misused to cause physical harm (I'll include cars in the category of tools), we can't register everything. There needs to be a point at which the State needs to just let people get on with their lives.

But you can also use it in other ways, right? Not so much with guns. Well, you might be a collector, but be a collector of bombs and you'll have problems anyway.

BTW you do register cars, don't you?

Not so much with guns.
A gun is a weapon that has one purpose, to maim or kill. It can't really be classed as a tool. A car is a tool to get you from A to B. A power drill is a tool to bore holes in walls and stuff. Both can be misused to cause harm but that was never the purpose of either. And yes, we all have to register cars if we use them on public roads. You don't need to register a car if it's on private land.

My point was - due to their specific nature (it can be only used in a harmful way, really), guns should be under a more serious scrutiny than other things/tools, cries for privacy notwithstanding. Not outright ban, but be careful about it. Maybe that puts me politically somewhere, but it really shouldn't. Not if I can read in the news about how two year old accidentaly shot a two year old.

LC's suggestion sounded good to me. Making it harder to acquire a gun - makes it harder for the black market too. At least, if the guns are not as common then, it's easier to spot those who have 'em. I don't really need gun nuts and vigilantes around me to "protect" me. But then again, here in Czechia most of the people I've met never even seen a real gun, me included.

I've got to this stage in my life with never having touched a real gun and have hardly ever seen one. I don't think we needs guns and I don't disagree with the need to have some sort of control. But for tools and stuff, not so.

The difference between a power tool that has the potential to be lethal and a gun is that the gun has only one purpose: to propel a round into a target in such a manner as to leave that being dead. The power tool is just lethal in the hands of morons and action heroes.

The NRA would see that as very big brother/big state.
I have no problem with the government keeping track of guns in this way. But I generally think "big brother" concerns are overblown when it comes to stuff like that. No different than social insurance.

Indeed. Still, at least I can attempt to run away from a maniac with a drill and give myself a fighting chance. Not so with the same maniac and a gun.

On a more lighter note, it's not just Friday it's the start of a bank holiday weekend. So to all you UK bods (and any one else who has a bank holiday weekend), go nuts and enjoy it. The sun is out and the weather is looking good for this weekend. To anyone else who does not have a long weekend, enjoy it anyway.

But if you're working over the weekend, I'll have a beer on your behalf.

To everyone who's interested: help to decide which solo is the winner of the final match in the Tournament of Maiden solos.
Please don't vote immediately: First listen to the whole vid before you vote. If you still can't choose, keep listening until you can. ;--) And then vote.
Go here to be part of the thriller, thanks in advance: Tournament of Maiden Solos: The FINAL !
(if any questions about the numbers or if you don't know how to select the right solo, don't hesitate to ask)

I need this long weekend. The last time off I had was 3 days with Maidenfans on Oslo which wasn't long enough. I was back at work the next day finishing a report and then I moved house the next weekend. The long weekend started yesterday for me as I went to London for a gig and on Monday my housemate and I are walking to some village along the river.

Was walking to the bus stop when I got a call - nobody at work can get on the phones, can I connect at home and try?

This led to 45 minutes of me being the only person who could take calls until the switches in the office were reset.
