Ah, there's more to it than that. He was healthy when the police put him in the police car, and then he was in a coma when that car got to the jail. He died because of how the police treated him, not simply a coincidental death in police custody.

Possibly .. but given it just happened and the autopsy has not happened yet, nothing is known for sure .. except that tons of damage was done and many injured in the riots that ensued

Thank you.

Bearfan, I hate it how you overemphasize riots and evade unnecessary police violence.

I do not jump to conclusions. it is entirely possible the cops killed this guy and if they did, they should be punished. But what did the people that got hurt in the riots do? What are people in that neighborhood supposed to do now that many places that provide them services are shut down (including the main drug store that was looted) supposed to do, and what are all the people now out of work supposed to do?

I feel very badly for them, but I guess it is okay because it was "for a cause"

Hopefully they will see what a moron they have for a mayor

I have a question for you, bearfan: do you think there is an endemic problem with racism and police violence in the USA?

Yeah, I think there is a problem. I have said before, I think cops should all be wearing cameras. I think it is a minority of cops and most do their jobs as they should, but the bad apples need to be weeded out. I can tell you the answer is not more "let's put 10,000 more cops on the streets) programs, which end up dredging up the bottom of the barrel applicants.

The answer is also not torch your town

I recently read this book: http://newjimcrow.com/

It has convinced me that the problem is not that cops are bad people, but that the system rewards bad behaviour.

I have not read the book, but yeah the system is jacked up for sure .. federal, state, and local levels. Cops have a very tough job, they put up with a ton of crap from horrible people all day, they are held (and should be) to a high standard, they get sued constantly (this is where cameras will help the good ones), and they are now seen as revenue streams to many levels of government which does not endear them to the community, add to that a rash of "let's protect everyone from everything laws" and their ability to use common sense being taken away from them through regulation

Why was Erik (edit Garner, not Holder)stopped to start with, selling non-taxes loose cigarettes .. fucking seriously, that is what cops need to spend their time doing?

Yeah ... big mess

I and the fiancee bought this today... Fronted 20%, four year plan to pay it off.

It needs to be said we drove a 99 Skoda Felicia prior to t his. And the plastic front was glued together after an unfortunate incident...

If a majority of black people weren't violent and criminal like in the first place, police would have no reason to be racist. Sadly, things will never change and have only gotten worse with all the riots and will probably continue to get worse unless black people change their ways which probably won't happen either. But I've already made all these points a number of times in the politics thread. Oh well. Until it has a very direct impact on my life, I shouldn't worry about it too much.

That is so highly insulting, demeaning, prejudiced and yes - racist, that I can't believe you just said that. My jaw is literally at the floor and I'm fumbling to pick it up.

The majority of black people are violent and criminal????????

Swedes are also blonde, muslims are terrorists, Irish people all carry knives, greeks are all racists, all latinos are drug dealers and great soccer players. All black people are also naturally gifted at basketball. White people are all rich, greedy bastards.

Am I forgetting something here? Oh yes, all Americans are imperialistic, Finnish people drink shitloads of vodka, Romani's are all thiefs, Russians are evil and finally, all Canadians are decent people. And Danes are all racists.

And those Italians. All they do is eat pasta and make pizza. Literally. All native Americans are nowadays casino owners and all Texans are concealed carriers.

Travis, that comment is way out of line. Consider this a warning.
