I'm sure there are decent suburbs and smaller areas of Las Vegas, but it's the location and the climate that make it hell for me. It's hot, it's dry, it's literally in the middle of nowhere, there are tourists everywhere...it's like the Mos Eisley spaceport of U.S. cities.

LOL ... that is a good comparison. I would not want to live there myself, but it is a fun place to visit on occasion. There is just so much weird shit, it is cool for 3 or 4 days, then I am ready to go home.

You have a higher tolerance for Vegas than I do. Since it's such a short and inexpensive flight from L.A., I have a self-imposed 40-hour max in Vegas. Fly in late Friday afternoon, leave first thing Sunday morning (sometimes on less than 2 hours' sleep). Relax at home all day Sunday. It's a formula that works for me. Keeps me from completely loathing the place.

HAPPY OPETH MONTH, everyone!

Malcolm Young suffers from dementia (at an age of 61!) and retires from AC/DC :(

In other news: Reasonability prevails, the Conservative party of Norway has decided it will not back a bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in Oslo. This means the bid is off, as the only party who have not yet made a stance - the Norwegian Labour Party - does not have the majority and thus cannot force it through on their own.

Why am I happy about that, when I'm such a sucker for winter sports?

  • The process leading up to this bid has been full of flaws. A bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Tromsø, Northern Norway, was ditched due to the expected high costs. The 2022 bid was to be more expensive. Compared to the 1994 WO at Lillehammer, it would be three times as expensive (corrected for inflation). If kept within the budget, that is ...
  • The Olympics has turned into an event which is more about the sponsors than the athletes. I'd rather see us host the various World Championships more often.
  • An argument in favour of hosting was that Oslo needs to invest in new sports arenas. Still, only 3 bn NOK out of a budget of 37 bn NOK was intended for arenas.
