My particle physics knowledge is lacking I'm afraid.

Well, when a particle of "normal" matter collides with a corresponding anti-particle (e.g. an electron and a positron) they are annihilated (one heavy metal pun ready for use) and the result is gamma radiation (another heavy metal pun right there!).
