Holland is a skating country.

In the whole world there are 32 400m indoor ice tracks. 17 of these 32 are in the Netherlands. Wherever you are in the Netherlands, we're having a skating track at a max of 60 km distance.

Albertville: Ice track: broken down
Sarajevo: gone after the Olympics
One year after the last Winter Olympics. Vancouver used their Ice arena for other purposes. They said: we already have one in Calgary, let's get rid of this one.

This is illustrative for most if not all countries out there. They simply put more energy and money (and stimulation of talent) in other sports.

Funny, you post this. Just this afternoon I watched a news clip about funding elite sports, filmed at Vancouver's speed skating oval.
Most of the young athletes they showed training there were volleyball players.
There were speed skaters shown, but they looked like they were skating on a hockey rink.

And I stumbled on something that may explain some questionable skiing results:

Yeah, and I can tell you why: I turn off my alarm clock for once, and sleep for thirteen hours straight.

That's a shame. I think he should have gone to the zoo. You never know if the future Mrs Wizard isn't currently cleaning koala cages.

She's a bonny lass...

Good afternoon!

Got up 30 min earlier than usual today just to watch the men's biathlon. Only to find out it's been rescheduled again! However, cool to see that the youngest member of the Norwegian women's team, Tiril Eckhoff, did well in their race today. A 3rd place was well above expectations and equal to her best World Cup finish!

I am embarassed on behalf of the skating team, though. Not a single Norwegian skater will participate in the 10,000m tomorrow :(

Many Canadians going nuts over perceived injustice in the Olympic ice dance competition.

There was a pre-Olympic report in the same French magazine that brought down Lance Armstrong that a deal had been made where the Russians would give the US favourites the gold in exchange for a Russian underdog winning bronze.
That's exactly what happened, leaving the Canadian favourites with silver.

I didn't watch the skate (all teams reportedly skated well) and even if I did, I don't pretend to have enough knowledge to pass judgment. I will say this is what you are bound to get with a judged sport without criteria clearly explained to the audience. And I also wonder why questions seem to dog figure skating far more than say diving, or gymnastics.

Figure skating isn't a sport. It's dancing, which is art. I'm extremely sceptical of the inclusion of events in the Olympics which are scored qualitatively.
