I've taken the route that the ventilators listen (rather than listening to the ventilators) while they torture. I mean, these ventilators have one sole purpose (other than to torture) and that is to listen. They epitomise all that is evil. They make clowns seem tame in comparison - just steer clear of the "listening ventilators", for your very own safety.

I think I labelled the point and made less sense of the story to boot. :D
