The other day, I was once again on the guide job in the museum. They had some sort of book reading or concert or whatever going on two hours after closing time, and the idea was that guests wander in an hour early, check out the exhibition and the guides just stand around and people ask them about things. Apart from myself, there was another bloke on duty who seemed to have more experience with this sort of service, so I went up to him and asked him about it. I'd already met the fellow before and he struck me as a bit odd, but so what. Well, he replied to me that "you have to walk up to people and offer them a tour. For example, last time I went over to this group and said: 'hello there, would you like to have a tour through the museum?' and they said 'no', and I said 'yes, you do.' and I pointed over to that piece over there and asked them 'can you tell me what that is? No? I thought so. So you obviously need a tour.' So they sometimes resist, and sometimes they aren't interested in what you tell them, but you just need to be insistent and it will work." At that point, I noticed how my eyebrows raised absolutely automatically. I mean, what the...?
I ended up guiding a group of three who knew nothing but were very interested, which is my favourite type of people to guide anyway.
