A completely different topic:

Many members of the forum come from countries with long traditions in brewing. In Norway, brewing of beer has been around since the Viking age, and for the midwinter festival it was actually mandatory to brew beer. From the 1200s onwards (long after the country was christianized), it was actually a punishable offense to not brew sufficient amounts of beer for jol (or yule, for those who are more fluent in English than old Norse). You could go to prison for that, or at least be fined. Every farmer should brew enough for his family and still have some to offer to guests.

The point being: To this day, all breweries in Norway have special beer variants that they only sell in the weeks before Christmas. These are generally red/dark ales with more sweetness than the standard beers, that are usually of the lager type. So I wonder, do any of your countries also have this tradition for yuletide beer, different from the beer you drink the rest of the year?

I live in Delft, once the beer city of Holland.

In medieval times Delft had more than 200 beer breweries within its city walls.
The first brewery was made in 1210. Around 1500 the most beer was made but after 1670 it went downhill because of tea, coffee, chocolate and wine. In 1922 the last brewery closed its doors for good.

In Holland we have winterbier and in Belgium they call it eindejaarsbier (end of the year beer)
These winterbeers are often also sweeter, made with special herbs, products like

allspice
honey
cinnamon
liquorice
clove

Some examples of such beers, copied from internet (including some Dutch info):

Budels Winterbier (7,5 vol%)

Ter Dolen Winterbier (8 vol%)

For some reason, I really like her face. She's got some sort of serious "no shit" attitude coming from it.

Anyway.

When special beers are brewed in Germany, it's more for other festive occasions, like the Oktoberfest or similar regional celebrations. If there is a special tradition for Christmas beer, it has evaded me. On Christmas, Germans prefer to drink mulled wine (Glühwein), often with a shot of amaretto or rum. I think nothing is more wonderful for a German Christmas than a Glühwein on the Nuremberg Christmas Market in the freezing cold (Nuremberg being the most Christmas-ish town in the country).

In Norway we have a hot drink called gløgg, which can be seen as a cousin of Glühwein. It's usually based on red wine, just like Glühwein, but I think the things you put in it are slightly different.

It's not uncommon to "heat it up" a little extra, by adding brandy  :D

Not that I'm aware of in Canada. But we do have green Keith's for St Patricks Day.

UGH 10 AM GOTTA WORK.

We have the same, glögi. And we're not that particular what we "heat it up" with.  :P

I was so close to making a joke, but realized it is somewhat insensitive... so instead I'll allude to it by saying: ADRIAN BRODY! :p

Well, I should mention that brandy is only the most common item to use to give it more "bite". I guess moonshine will also do the job  :D

I don't think we've been misogynous. Onhell came closer with chauvinism =seeing them like something different. As far it's not vulgar, and it wasn't, it's fine.

Now, I don't know about you guys, but I'm seeing them as something different. There is a mystery. I love them.

If we did, I couldn't care less if they posted pictures of dudes here, as long as they keep their thunder birds under cover.

This phrase is very rich. Pure inception!  :D

Please go ahead, I'm not offended by anything. And I don't get the reference!

I always thought he only played a jew in the pianist.

But not really, doesn't look like her at all.

Anyways, question:
Years ago I made a deal with my dad: I'll listen to Floyd's Wish you were Here, and he'll listen to SSoaSS.
I listenet to WYWH and loved it, and today I love Pink Floyd.
He hated SSoaSS and now he starts jokingly bashing me every time I mention Maiden.

I got him to agree ti listen to another album, if I agree to listen to Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (psyched, I already listened to half of it and it's great).

Anyhow, here's his taste: Loves prog rock, doesn't have a problem with mellow punk (The Clash) and pretty much hates it when Bruce is yelling, although he was sorta okay with slower songs from Bruce's solo career.

So, what album should I give him? I think that no Blaze or Paul album will do (well, maybe TXF?), so maybe I should just make him a mix CD. What songs should I put on it?

One thing that helps when trying to get someone into Maiden is to have them follow along with the lyrics. If they know what Bruce is saying, they might be able to get into his singing better. Also, they should be songs with simpler lyrics so they can be better understood. Songs like Aces High, The Longest Day, The Prisoner, and The Talisman are simpler while songs like Starblind, Brave New World, Revelations, and Brighter Than A Thousand Suns are more symbolic and complex.
Hey, did someone make it so the gif in my sig moves slower? I do like it better that way. :D
