The Bruce Birthday thread should not be anywhere - I mean, it's not like he will read it anyway....let alone reply.LooseCannon said:2. The Bruce Birthday thread is in Maiden Chat, instead of General Chat, where birthday threads traditionally go.
Quite.Wasted CLV said:Funny that some n00bs think its disrespectful to not post there
We use remote desktop assistance through our network. However, we used to use Microsoft's tool to jump on to a users PC to help out and that required the end user to allow us to view their desktop. But we have since been given a new tool - Bomgar. Bomgar does not require any authorisation from the end user (at least the way we have it configured) and that is a big security risk. I can view anyone's desktop on our network from anywhere in the world without their consent. Yes, they do get a big pop up message to say I'm on and could kick me out in an instant, but that could be too late. They may not be looking at their screen at the time and may not know for, what, 15 seconds or more? An example was the other day I was helping out a programmer. He needed to get on his PC, so I asked for his machine name and as he was sitting right next to me, he could only guess. So I jumped on to that PC and found myself on a finance users PC and could see the whole screen. Now, what if that was the MD's screen.....or my boss?Wasted CLV said:In other news, I'm having a pretty fun time doing remote desktops, and remote assistance through our network... I've never really had a chance to do anything like that before, so its all new. I keep thinking "oh, I really wish I knew what I was doing." The guys are really good at explaining, but they do so many dif things, its taking me a little while to nail it all down. I have learned some shortcuts that I should have known....
I don't think 10 minutes a day to join in a few discussions isn't asking too much.LooseCannon said:Jon's a nice guy, but he has a life well above and beyond Maidenfans, and I wouldn't expect to see him too much.
Not really. He only should participate as and when he sees fit. All we ask of him is to keep this site ticking over and respond to help. Like adding a few more (unnecessary) smilies.Travis_AKA_fonzbear2000 said:I don't think 10 minutes a day to join in a few discussions isn't asking too much.

Yeah, we just use the Windows tool- remote desktop, remote desktop assistance, and net meetings, depending on what needs to be done. So far, so cool...we were deploying a new laptop the other day, and I had no idea i could set up a widow of the new desktop folder on the screen of the old lappy to copy and paste-- i should have known that but never thought-- yeah, n00b.
On a slightly lighter note, I got a new HDD for my WinXP PC the other day and had to rebuild it. As it is designed to be our backup device and host the networked printer, I keep it on a static IP address. So I went through all the basics of setting it up and found that although I could remote desktop to it, it could not get on the 'net. Why was this, it was simply down to me not setting the default gateway. That, my friend, is what is known in the trade as a schoolboy error.
Funny on your gateway error, my supervisor did the same thing right in front of me-- he said "yep, i can do rookie mistakes too"
