That's a solid lineup of songs, and yeah, upon a recent listen, All in Your Mind does fit the vibe of the album incredibly well.

Agreed, which is why the only one I'd consider a contender for inclusion would be Reach Out, being an original composition that wasn't comedic a la Sheriff.

As do I. Completely pointless oddball noise. While I don't like the title track of Senjutsu much, it does establish a feel for the album as an intro...just one that way overstays its welcome, IMO. Satellite leads into Final Frontier (the song) well enough, but just about anything would've been better and more memorable.

Final Frontier is still the Maiden album I can't get excited about, but there are a few songs that have grown on me some. The latter half is stronger, and I've grown to like El Dorado quite a bit and the title track (minus Satellite).

I really enjoy The Final Frontier but it is such a lopsided album. They should have mixed the shorter songs and epics.

It's not that I like it a lot. To be fair I don't since it looks like a sketch of a song, an unfinished work. It's just that I much rather have it there then the other four I ditched.

Why everyone hates Wasting Love? I absolutely adore it. But I'm a sucker for ballads anyway. But hey, everyone is different. For example, I can't stand Sanctuary and Running Free. On the albums they are okay, but stretching them for 10 minutes? Please no. Sometimes I just stop LAD or Maiden England after Run to the Hills.

Interesting, cutting both Dream of Mirrors and The Nomad, 2 out of my 3 favourite songs of Brave New World. But enjoyable lists!
 
Two unpopular opinions from my side:

- Satellite 15 works absolutely fine as an intro and I personally believe they should still use it for opening their shows, though not necessarily continuing with The Final Frontier song. The thing is, after Satellite 15, TFF song sounds a bit underwhelming and too Alternative/Pop punk-like, as per Maiden's standards (mind you, the first solo in it is one of my favourites by the band!).

- I Live My Way has one of Maiden's most beautiful intros! But that doesn't necessarily translate that the entire song is awesome, yet its still a fun little song! Both Justice of The Peace and Judgement Day could have made it in the final pressing with I Live My Way, probably as a bonus track. Look For The Truth is the weakest link in it, in my opinion.

Sanctuary may not be their best song ever but wouldn't sound out of place in the debut. I like the hardcore punk energy in it. Twilight Zone has an awesome riff and is a great song that should have made it in the album. Though it's theme is similar to that of Purgatory, probably why the band didn't include it. All the non-album songs from Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son are good enough and have hints and traces of those recording periods, though I'm not of the opinion of definitely adding them!

I can only tell you why I hate it. Bruce's voice sounds strained, I absolutely detest the syncopated chorus and although being quite interesting the opening melody is too whiny for my taste and I'd never open a track with such depressive lyrics with it. And it's not the format: Maiden have other ballad-ish songs I love, like Strange World, Prodigal Son, Out Of The Darkness, Coming Home or Blood Brothers.

I also love The Nomad but it's blatant plagiarism so I can't let it pass. As for Dream Of Mirrors, I love the sang verses and chorus and also enjoy the bridge. But what really turns me off is a couple of awful sections (the intro and second melody) and the fact they keep on repeating the same melodies at the end at a different tempo (poor structuring therefore). If it was a 6 minute track without the intro, second melody and sped up part it would remain on my tracklist for sure.

Agreed. I'd only trim drastically the length on the beginning (before Bruce starts singing) and make it a track of its own.

IMO Sanctuary is a beast of a song and had everything to be the band's debut opening track (and Prowler would be a gorgeous 2nd song). The same works for Invasion on side B.

Depressive songs are my favourite, to be honest :D And I can totally feel the lyrics is Wasting Love. Actually I never really liked uplifting or happy songs. For me, music is for writing, screaming, letting out what hurts. There's nothing to write out about happiness.

But that's exactly the only thing I like about Wasting Love (that and the solo/ bridge). What I dislike when it comes to that aspect is that some sections are too mellow to be main sections of a tune versing about such a depressive matter (like the first melody... I'd still use it somewhere in the middle of the song though).
 
I love it when music truly illustrates lyrics. Take Strange World as an example... The mysterious and kind of stall ambient of its melodies really relates to the surrealism depicted on the lyrical department. Or Children Of The Damned, where the innocence of childhood is deconstructed... the angst on the chorus and further tragic frenzy being unleashed on the last section. What about Blood Brothers, where all the hurt and melancholy is somehow exorcised on that emotionally releasing chorus, letting us know that, although just human and full of defects, we all belong and have a family and group of people that love us. Yet, when it comes to depression, 2 AM is perhaps the best example... it truly Illustrates the feeling the lyrics bear.

Did you go so far as to edit out Nicko's "that's it, that's the one" off the end of The Unbeliever? I remember having to do a tiny edit to Justice of the Peace to cut out Nicko's little count-in.

As for the crappy sound mix, I still haven't gotten around to biting the bullet to see if the 2015 remaster of it is any better than the original CD version. I've heard some say it's better, others say the original is the way to go.

I'm glad you liked the retelling of my TXF adventure. :)

Did you get a chance since then to try out this reordered and/or the expanded version?

I worked my ass off in this project of mine mind you. Like a total geek, I kept listening to the endings and beginnings of the songs in Winamp, checking each variation, to see how well they flow into each other, see which scenario works the best.

I think even the plain reorder version is a huge improvement, with the original 11 tracks. The album is a lot more varied, it keeps your interest and is not a chore to get through. At least for me that's how it used to feel.

And the Expanded version is even better of course. The only version for me now. :) A super plus is that Virus is also on it, I think it's a brilliant song and belongs on an album. It has its rightful place now.

To answer your question, I left Nicko's comment in The Unbeliever as is. I find his voice reassuring. :bigsmile: "Fuck my old boots!!" :lol: That accent. Hilarious. :lol:

I think there's also some talk at the beginning of I Live My Way, which I never noticed before. (I've never listened to this song with headphones until recently.)

I haven't tried the 2015 remaster either, but will give it a go sometime.
