Judas Priest

Very sad news indeed. However it was deceptive to wait until after the tour tix went sale and purchased to make the announcement. Should have told us before the tour went on sale

I agree.

I wonder if they already knew K.K. Downing was leaving when they announced the Epitaph tour too.

Ouch. They say he was diagnosed 10 years ago, which explains his somewhat weird and sloppy playstyle over the last decade. What a riff machine and solo god the guy was in his prime. Here's a little compilation as tribute. This news actually makes me want to check out some Priest records that I've long disregarded.

Very sad news, I wish him the best.

I know I’ve just begun my Priest journey, but I was actually considering buying tickets for this tour. The steep price for standing room and lack of either classic guitarist really dissuades me, though.

If I can find a ticket deal and happen to have the night off, I will. Otherwise, it's a standing room only show for like $90 with only two-fifths of the classic lineup at a casino in Indiana...everything about that just sounds sad.

I'm clearly sad. It's entirely possible that Glenn's disease only recently progressed to this point as well - Parkinsons can advance rapidly in short periods - but of course, it could be a cold business decision. I'll see Priest on this tour, but I won't go again, and I hope they realize this means it's time to call it a day.

I remember various comments about him slowing down/getting old on the last tour, this might have a lot to do with it. His condition may have suddenly deteriorated. I'd definitely see them again, classic lineup or not. It wasn't an expensive gig, and I found it very good even as The Rob n Richie Show.

Hmm, this explains his not very good playing in the last 10 years.

K.K.'s strong comments on how bad the band played suddenly fall into a different light. He knew about the disease (must have!) and still chooses to make such a hard stand in his upcoming biography. This is going to be nasty.
memoir is coming:

In 'Heavy Duty', guitarist K.K. Downing discusses the complex personality conflicts, the business screw-ups, the acrimonious relationship with fellow heavy metal band IRON MAIDEN.

Lastly, he recounts the life-changing moment when he looked at his bandmates on stage during a 2010 concert and thought, 'This is the last show.' Whatever the topic, whoever's involved, K.K. doesn't hold back.
"I had lots and lots of reasons for not continuing, as I wasn't content with things as they were. I wasn't happy with the band's live performance. I thought it could have been better; not that the fans would notice. To me, PRIEST was always a stealth machine and that's what I liked about it. Even though you get older, you still need to be able to deliver the goods. People came a long way and paid a lot of money to see us, so you've got to make sure you still give 110 percent. I thought that should be inherent and what it should always be."

On a positive side, sounds like a great opportunity to meet Andy Sneap. And have your Sabbat CDs signed.

Very sad. Glenn has looked old and frail for years.
Explains a lot.

I suspect Glenn’s contributions to the new album were minimal and that this was known and kept quiet prior to the tour. Kinda slimey, but for some reason I’m not bothered much by it.

Very sad news. Honestly I think they should now retire with dignity..

Gutted I never got to see them with K.K. & Glenn together.

I bought tickets for the Epitaph ‘farewell’ tour but K.K. bailed after the dates were announced. Then Priest decided to continue as we know...

I'm saddened to hear of Glenn's illness. But I'm still going to see them. Andy Sneap will do fine, he's a great guitarist.
They should do a co-headlining tour with Iron Maiden next year and go out with a bang.

Back to the matter at hand, I think Sad Wings is not the all-time classic it is made out to be but it does mark a seminal moment in the evolution of the band and a touchstone in the history of metal in terms of the direction of the genre.

The heights are notable, even groundbreaking, it’s just not deep enough to call it an all-time album.

Genocide has some cool power riffing but ultimately runs out gas and feels aimless, Halford’s performance is too over the top in the OK but not memorable Domination and Epitaph is kinda cringey.

That leaves “just” five noteworthy songs.

Very sad to hear the news about Glenn. I don't necessarily disagree to keep touring but not having either of the two classic guitarists on stage will be very, very odd indeed.

I find it hard to think of Dreamer Deciever/Deciever separately. They fit so well together and with that great acoustic callback of the end, clearly work as a suite. I guess the quiet part is in line with things we heard on the first album, but the atmosphere, the Spanish guitar and piano touches and especially the vocal performance is a step above. And Glenn with the first hints of the great compositional skills he would bring to his solos. The crescendo of the impossibly high vocal at the end of the solo launches perfectly into clarity of Deciever. The restrained gallop of this section recalls some of Sabbaths faster stuff, with better vocals. Would love to hear it with a more metallic production
