Judas Priest

This joke is recycled more often than KK recycles song titles.
I don’t know, he recycles a lot of titles , cliches and themes… That being said, I really like the sophomore record, but it is not as good as Shield. Really happy that KK kept Newton away from the mixing desk and shelved out the cash for Hansen’s services instead, as Newton’s mix and production made the first album worse than it is.

I am not a massive fan of Judas Priest like I am of Maiden. I do like the new album a lot and I think Richie Faulkner did a phenomenal job in terms of riffs and solos. I think if Judas Priest had a varied guitar duo/trio like maiden who are also song writers bringing different styles, the overall album would have benefited. I also think the album could have had one or two slow brooding epics like the Pacrement :p

Apologies if it's already been discussed here, but the main riff of The Serpent and the King, particularly when it's played in isolation before the last verse, is a total rip off of some famous riff, that I can't put my finger on. I'm feeling maybe Metallica or NWOBHM??

Any ideas?

I don't know if I'd say it's a total rip off, but it made me think of "Seek and Destroy" straight away.

The album has a lot of moments that echo other songs, mostly older Priest tunes, and I can't help but wonder if Richie's been instructed/is trying too hard to "make it sound like Priest", it's especially strange when Firepower didn't have many moments like that.

Yep!

The rhythm part for the solo

Setlist change tonight. It was one song shorter and there was a substitution for another, and a change in play order. I can't get spoilers to work with my poor signal here, so I haven't named them out of courtesy to others - see Setlist fm for info.

I think it worked. Rob was slightly rough on the first few songs, but his voice had some great moments later on, and his screams were as powerful as ever.

I'm not sure what the sound desk was up to. The guitars were indistinct to start off with but sounded better as the show went on. They also had the vocals way too high on one of the new songs, and it didn't do justice to either Rob's voice or the song overall.

The stage is effective, I think. It's a sparse layout, but the lighting, video screens, giant suspended logo, and video content, look great.

I'd ideally like to see a proper two guitarist show on stage. It's part of Priest's appeal, and it seems odd having two guitarists but only one in the spotlight. I don't think it's any disrespect to Glenn to do it. Richie is flawless as ever, of course.

If anything really did Priest a disservice, though, it was Saxon's performance being a tough act to follow.

I'm not Saxon fan, but they sounded incredible. The guitars were clear as a bell, and their stage presence and getting the audience involved was star quality. They were joined by retired/semi retired guitarist Paul Quinn for a couple of songs at the end, and absolutely smashed it with three guitarists. Not missing the fact that they are also touring a new album.

Note to other bands: don't have Saxon as support - they're too much like headliners.

I saw Priest with Saxon as support as well and had a similar reaction, I may have even posted about it here back then. Not a big Saxon fan but they were great live and I actually really dig their newer material. A lot of fire that Priest seems to lack now.

For sure, but that won't be enough to improve some songs, just the variety of the material (I guess, given IS songs).
Halford in concert is anything between good and ridiculous. He really doesn't live up to the studio performances. Bruce is in many ways the opposite.
This is true. When Rob is on, he sounds good. Not amazing, though he always has some amazing moments, but good. Bruce is always good and frequently astounding.
On record, however, totally opposite.
I can agree. Not all the time for Bruce though (depends on some songs), but he's always good/better live. Maiden did not use ''studio magic'' since the Reunion. No one can match his stage energy. This is true about Rob and studio performances (especially since 1990), but some of the songs are very difficult, we have to give him credit. It's good enough (I like the 2009/2011 or the Wacken 2015 performances), especially compared to 2008.
He will need to change the vocal approach of The Serpent And The King if they play it. They will play more new songs for sure, and this is one of the most popular songs.
A lot of fire that Priest seems to lack now.
Certainly not the last 2 albums. Their styles are not that different. Saxon's last 2 albums are very good, but for me Priest are better.

Breaking The Law as song #3 in the set! Wow. Has it ever happened before?

They dropped Beyond The Realms Of Death and replaced Screaming For Vengeance (expected) with Electric Eye.

That guy shot a couple of songs at the barrier...although this was technically an all seated show...and the sound is so different.

It's weird, I found the same with Maiden in this venue in 2017. Their sound was less than good from the second tier but people in Standing said it was great. I've also seen Ghost and Slash here and the sound was great.

This is what I mean about the vocals being up unflatteringly loud and trebley in one song:

Ritchie sounds good though.

His voice still sounds quite strong but that’s not good singing.
