Judas Priest

I see the failed golf entrepreneur is at it again!

I chuckled when I read him claiming writing everything in the 60s and early 70s. I bet that is what made Rocka Rolla such a classic album.

What a deluded piece of shit.
KK is a bitter and deluded, but I'd hardly call him a piece of shit (and I wouldn't want him back in the band if I was Rob, Ian etc): The band had become a bad marriage in 2011, and he's obviously landed in a downward spiral of sorts. There is plenty of blame to go around for what landed them in that place in 2011 (and a bit onwards as well), but KK isn't handling it remotely well. He's all emotion, no afterthought at this point, but there is more to this shit slinging than "KK left and is bitter about that they won't let him back in".

It is what it is, you know?

Here's the full interview. It's a shit load of resentment and skewed takes, but still interesting. I pre-ordered the new KK's Priest album; it's looking far more promising than the debut, that's for sure.

Both parties have guilt, but KK just have to stop, although he has some good points, but the mistake of leaving in the first place was his. He has a solo band now. For me, Priest released 2 great albums without him.

From the interview, it seems he wants to play songs from all JP albums, which is cool - we might get to hear some never played live songs. From the videos I've seen, the band sounds really good live.
He doesn't like Richie's debut solo album because that's not his style of metal/music. He is fan of old school bands like Scorpions, UFO, Saxon (what about Maiden, KK? Admit it.).
He also said that he enjoys writing songs on his own (like in the early days of JP), which is probably why his solo songs sound kind of samey... (although in another interview he said that he wrote some of the songs for the new album with the other guitarist and that he wanted to release 2 albums in 1 year so he can tour for 2-3 years in a row).

I also think the new album is going to be quite good, he should just stick making good music

Such a great headline. Clearly, the "bass player" took the necessary steps to secure the legal rights to the name, and surprisingly, maintaining positive relationships with the other board members has proven to be a valuable investment. It's baffling to me how someone can dedicate nearly four decades to building a legacy through their writing and performances under a name without ensuring proper legal rights. I believe it would be fairer to the fans if KK had the opportunity to create his own version of Judas Priest. While I have great respect for Andy and Ritchie, it does seem odd to have a KK and Glenn-less rendition of Priest performing music written by KK and Glenn.

You are aware that he’s already done this and released two albums under the name “K.K.’s Priest”, right…?
What are you talking about? I said forming a version of Judas Priest. Claiming that KK's Priest is a legitimaste version of Judas Priest might be the stupidest thing I've read on this forum.

Legitimate or not, it is his attempt at a continuation of Judas Priest under his direction. And it sucks ass.

Claiming that K.K.’s Priest isn’t “a version of Judas Priest”, given its name, its members, its song titles, and its style of music, is ludicrous. (Whether it’s “legitimate” or good is another matter entirely.)

I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine which comment was more stupid.

Calling the band KK's Priest, rehashing old Priest song titles on two albums now, and coming out with a new interview every month or so that just digs a deeper hole of Priest even considering letting him back in the band (that he left on his own in the first place). It's truly pathetic. Is KK fucking stupid or mental or what? Dead serious question...

He's never been the sharpest tool in the box, you know?

It is what it is.

Discussing the authenticity of the band requires taking legal aspects into account; it's a matter of being either legitimate or not. However, it's certainly tempting to raise questions about the current Judas Priest touring lineup without KK and Tipton ;) It seems that my message may have been misconstrued, as you deliberately overlooked the essence of the post and attempted to present KK's Priest as a genuine incarnation of Judas Priest, a concept that doesn't hold water. Just as Heaven and Hell was distinct from Black Sabbath, KK's Priest is separate from Judas Priest. Moreover, the argument you're putting forth concerning its members doesn't hold up either. It boasts only one long-standing member from Judas Priest, alongside a singer who was part of the band for a relatively brief period. Rather than attempting to portray KK's Priest as on par with one of the most renowned heavy metal bands in history, namely Judas Priest, you could make a compelling argument by questioning the legitimacy of the current official (Sneap-Faulkner-Hill-Travis-Halford) live lineup. It's worth noting that this lineup did not contribute to the creation of any of the classic musical material found in Judas Priest's catalog.

It's highly likely that the legal entity representing Judas Priest took measures to ensure there wouldn't be another version in circulation. This situation draws parallels with the Jefferson Starship/Jefferson/Airplane/Starship scenario. You could argue that Yes featuring jon anderson/rabin/wakeman for example, was a legitimate iteration of Yes, but it still did not constitute the official entity recognized as Yes (even though the current official lineup lacks members from some of their most popular 1980s catalog). This is akin to Geoff Tate's short-lived version of Queensrÿche or Jack Russell's Great White.

KK's Priest does not meet the legal criteria to be considered a version of Judas Priest. In fact, no matter how hard one may try to argue otherwise, it simply doesn't qualify as such. Can you genuinely imagine anyone attending a KK's Priest concert with the expectation of witnessing an authentic rendition of Judas Priest? That would be absurd.

Legitimate or not, it is his attempt at a continuation of Judas Priest under his direction.

What do his intentions have to do with my original post? It was evident that I didn't consider it to be a version of Judas Priest in any case.

This is what you said:

1) KK’s Priest is legally not Judas Priest, but it is KK’s attempt at creating his own version of Judas Priest. Yes, I know that it’s not legitimate — if you show up to a KK’s Priest concert you know it’s KK’s Priest and not the real deal Judas Priest — but if you want fairness to the fans then this is what you get. Even if KK just straight up took the name Judas Priest for these albums the music wouldn’t change, and frankly having a different name for this work makes sense so people know who is who. When Geoff Tate tried to steal the Queensrÿche name, he got blasted straight out of the court room. Having two touring entities going by the name “Judas Priest” is a complete fantasy in the first place, especially because:

2) He left the fucking band. I mean, am I missing something here? If you leave the band you’re not entitled to it any longer. The band can now make its own decisions. It’s like if back in ‘97 someone said Rob should get to do his own version of Judas Priest — no, he left the band. He can create Rob’s Priest to compete with them, but Judas Priest is still the original band and whoever is a part of that. That band chose Richie and Andy, so they are members of Judas Priest. KK left Judas Priest, so he is no longer a member of Judas Priest.

3) And finally, Rob and Ian have been with Priest since the beginning (barring the ‘90s kerfuffel), Scott has been with them since the ‘90s and played on Painkiller, Richie was KK’s replacement, Andy is a touring guitarist, and Glenn is still part of the band, just no longer on stage. This is a legitimate lineup. A lot of bands could wish for something this strong. They’ve been around for fifty years and still have four classic members in their ranks; plus a new guy who has become one of the most lauded modern metal guitarists; and their producer, who is widely regarded as the metal producer, helping out on stage. KK’s Priest — his version of Judas Priest, name or not — is a bunch of hired guns, including Ripper, the ‘greatest’ hired gun in the history of metal. Please tell me which lineup is more legitimate here.

I don't particularly concern myself with his attempts; my initial point was that it would be intriguing to witness a scenario akin to what happened with Yes and Yes featuring ARW. The current Yes lineup, featuring Steve Howe, doesn't even include any members who contributed to some of their most popular songs, yet it still holds official status. A hypothetical band led by KK Downing, featuring Les Binks and Ripper Owens, could potentially contend with the official Judas Priest lineup. However, I don't believe the KK's Priest band can compete effectively. It all boils down to the name!

Watching Judas Priest on tour without Glenn Tipton and KK Downing feels akin to witnessing Iron Maiden without Adrian Smith. If that suits your preference, that's perfectly fine. Personally, I'll opt for KK's Priest ;)
