Judas Priest Discography Discussion (part 2 starting page 20)

One Shot At Glory is an amazing song ! Fantastic chorus and solos - hidden gem from the album. I don't get why Priest do not played it live yet.

In anyways this is a classic from the band. Third best song on the album (after the title track and Night Crawler). Rob's voice on the Painkiller album is fantastic!

If you mean in the part before the second chorus, I'd disagree. I always found that line kinda jarring, Halford is barely recognisable to me. If you mean the last line of the song however, I totally agree, that's awesome.

Both of them are astounding to me. Halford's upper/falsetto/shrieking register is always impressive, but it's normally used like a knife - the notes cut through in bursts or wails, quick cuts or long slashes. That's the first time I remember hearing him in that register, with such power, and doing a melodic run of notes at the same time. It's awesome.

Painkiller is such a homogenous album that most people seem to rate the songs pretty closely together. The biggest stylistic shift is A Touch of Evil and even that isn’t that far removed from everything else in tone. So I kinda get Foro’s point. The same qualities that are loved in Painkiller and Night Crawler are found in One Shot At Glory and Between the Hammer and Anvil. One Shot at Glory especially has a ton of melody. With that in mind, based on your reviews, some of these ratings seem a bit random.

I would rank all 70s Priest albums except the first one above Painkiller. I love Painkiller but the 70s stuff had some more variation to it, i think British Steel was a downgrade but i really love Defenders the most from the 80s and then came Turbo...

I dunno, BTHATA is decent when listening to it but it just doesn’t have enough draw for me. One Shot at Glory is better, but mostly for the chorus. Not big on the rest - the pre-chorus has a very iffy melody IMO - but I think sometime in future with enough listens I could possibly bump it up more. But right now I just don’t think those three songs are much more than average affairs, with the rest of the album being good to awesome. Just my opinion, I can see why others would like it (more or less).

If I was going to pick any songs to nitpick about on Painkiller (and I shouldn't pick any). it wouldn't be those two, it would be the metal-by-numbers stuff like Leather Rebel or Metal Meltdown for balancing on just about the right side of the razors edge between metal cliche and metal awesomeness.

I mean yeah, Metal Meltdown is by far the album’s lowest point, but that’s mostly because of the chorus.

Side two of the album is way more interesting, varied, and stronger overall than side one.

Fun trivia for ya, the solos for Metal Meltdown were the last parts to be recorded for the album, while the mixing was taking place. Explains why the tones are so wildly different from the other solos.

This is how I'd rank them..

1. Night Crawler
2. Between the Hammer and the Anvil
3. Painkiller
4. Touch of Evil
5. Battle Hymn/One Shot of Glory
6. Leather Rebel
7. Hell Patrol
8. All Guns Blazing
9. Metal Meltdown

Metal Meltdown is the only bad song imo.

Metal Meltdown might be the weakest song. Anyway, really good album. :)

Again, none of the songs on Painkiller are outright bad, and I certainly wouldn't skip them (but then I never skip tracks when listening to an album)... it's just that I think those three are just average. Better Priest songs out there.

Usually, on the scale of 1-10, 5 (a bottom half grade) has a negative meaning, e.g. below sufficient/insufficient/mediocre. It is not enough to qualify/pass for something on school with a 5. Basically, it is has a negative feel and is a dislike stamp in music as well.

From 6 and higher, it gets tolerable/sufficient. Average? Do average songs give you (sufficient) enjoyment?
I would give higher than a 5 then. Even if one finds that Priest has better songs, that's still possible.

Well worded (imo).

I get that, but a 5, to me, really just means a song is average. I consider 4 and below really negative. Even by using your way of reviewing, I'd still give the three songs fives. Just... average. Nothing too special but they aren't offensive at the same time.

JUDAS PRIEST - BRITISH STEEL

71q-4HcZyJL._SL1500_.jpg

  1. "Rapid Fire" - This is a nice opening track for the album. Very Mercyful Fate-esque... guess I never noticed how similar the 'classic metal sound' was among its pioneers. The lack of a chorus makes this pretty interesting, and Halford's end scream is outstanding. This is a truly rocking song, but not the most outstanding thing ever. Still, very good and I'm leaning positive as a whole - I'll go with an 8/10.
  2. "Metal Gods" - Very groovy song, this. Very good early metal stuff in the verse. I think the chorus is a moodkiller though; I was listening to this exact same song live last night in a Ripper-era live performance and I liked it much better. Never been a fan of this one, honestly. There's some good stuff but it doesn't rise above much. Good enough to be just above average though... I'll go with a 6/10.
  3. "Breaking The Law" - The immortal classic. Everything here is fantastic - riff, vocals (even if they aren't his finest performance, they fit the song really well), the musicianship, everything. It may be short and simple, but I'll be damned if it isn't one of their finest moments. Everyone is on fire in this moment of genius and it's deservedly one of the greatest metal songs ever. 10/10
  4. "Grinder" - Groovy riff here. The verse and chorus are pretty simple but I'm enjoying it. Definitely a good song; I think for now I'll give it an 8/10. Nice slab of classic metal.
  5. "United" - Interesting riff to this one. The verses are pretty simplistic. The pre-chorus is too country for me, and while the chorus is better, it gives me mixed emotions. It's the kinda thing I'd usually like, but somehow it doesn't really work for me here. Out of place in a Priest song, and the way the music backs it is just... eh. The bit where it just has the "We Will Rock You" stuff going on (guitarless) does nothing for me. I don't care for this one much. 4/10
  6. "You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise" - This riff is much better; feels like Priest doing an AC/DC kinda thing. The verse is pretty cool. This isn't quite as good as some of the other songs here, but it's a banger. Good stuff, interesting lack of a 'true' chorus. I'll give it a 7.5/10.
  7. "Living After Midnight" - Good drum beat before the riff kicks in. Chorus enters scene and it's good, but the verse has always been what I've liked best about the song. Groovy stuff here. This was the first Priest song I ever heard - not surprising given it's one of the few they play on radio - and I really liked it, but when I heard "You've Got Another Thing Coming" and other songs from them I kinda left it behind. I wouldn't say it's my favorite but it's definitely a good song. Enjoyable despite its seemingly made-for-radio feel. 8.5/10
  8. "The Rage" - I like the bass opening, with the drums kicking in and the guitars entering the scene. This is pretty cool. The riff itself is also pretty decent. Damn, this verse is pretty great. Halford is awesome here. The instrumental section is really nice. Again, no chorus, but it's really cool nonetheless. 8.5/10
  9. "Steeler" - Does this have the same beat as "Screaming For Vengeance"? Dunno. It's not as good as the latter anyway, while still being a cool banger. This is actually getting to be really cool. I like it a lot. Again, no chorus but it's a pretty awesome song. Great stuff. 9/10
Weird going through Painkiller, Jugulator, and Firepower and then coming back to this album. But it's good. Not a whole lot of stand-outs aside from "Breaking The Law", but it's quite strong with a few lesser songs on it nonetheless. Good classic metal sound.

Song Rating Average: 7.72/10

Same rating as Painkiller but I think I'll round it down to a 7.5/10. Pretty strong stuff as a whole but had some weaker aspects within it. Still good album that anyone should check out.

1. "Breaking The Law" - 10/10

2. "Steeler" - 9/10

3. "The Rage" - 8.5/10
4. "Living After Midnight" - 8.5/10
5. "Grinder" - 8/10
6. "Rapid Fire" - 8/10

7. "You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise"

8. "Metal Gods" - 6/10

9. "United" - 4/10

JUDAS PRIEST - SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE

Horns+Up+Rocks+Judas+Priest+Screaming+For+Vengeance+30th+Album+Cover+Art.jpeg

(I'm using this cover because it's somehow better than the original. :ninja:)
  1. "The Hellion" - Fucking perfect. The single greatest intro song of all time. 10/10
  2. "Electric Eye" - The iconic double-shot of "The Hellion / Electric Eye" is one of the greatest in all of metal. These two songs are fucking perfect, easily Top 10 songs from the band and work so well together it's unbelievable. Indeed, for a long time they were my favorite Priest songs period. Fantastic stuff. 10/10
  3. "Riding On The Wind" - Great way to continue from the perfection of the previous songs. Great verses and a simple but effective chorus, with some awesome Halford high notes. The solo is fantastic. I'm really liking this rocker. Great stuff. 9/10
  4. "Bloodstone" - Pretty cool opening before barreling into a nice riff. The verse is simple but good, and the chorus is repetitive but the way the vocals are mixed is great. This is a very boppy song. Yeah, so far this album has been pretty fucking strong. 9/10
  5. "(Take These) Chains" - I heard this song years ago when it popped up in a playlist or something and it was such a different Priest song that it grabbed my attention. I really like it. One of my more played songs from the album and the band. Great chorus, great music, everything is pretty great. Won't give it a 10, but there's enough here for a 9/10.
  6. "Pain and Pleasure" - This one isn't nearly as good as the five preceding songs, but it's still pretty cool. 7/10
  7. "Screaming For Vengeance" - Opening with a terrific Halford scream - justified by the title - this is another genuine Priest classic. Frantic verse and a hallowed chorus with some of Halford's finest singing, this is one of their defining songs for a reason. The solo is great, too. Outside of "Painkiller", this may just be his best vocal performance ever (or at least that I've heard so far, lol). Love this song. 10/10
  8. "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" - Such a great song. From the very beginning onward, you can tell this is gonna be big. And it fucking is. Unlike "Living After Midnight", which was a good radio song, this is a great one. Somehow it manages to tread the line of easily accessible and still fucking awesome. Great song. No less than a 10/10.
  9. "Fever" - After the sheer force of the two previous songs, this quieter intro is quite interesting. When the heaviness kicks in it's pretty damn good. The verse and the chorus are both pretty awesome. This instrumental is really mesmerizing. Yeah, this song is crazy good. I think it's enough for a 10/10.
  10. "Devil's Child" - Good opening riff and the verse is really fun, groovy, boppy, great stuff. The chorus is simple but great. Clearly they just threw this together for a nice exit but damn did they succeed nonetheless. This part after the solo is insane good. Fucking goddamn, this is gonna be the fourth 10/10 in a row and the sixth on the album overall. Love it.
Holy shit, I wasn't expecting this album to obliterate both Painkiller and Firepower, but it does. Unlike those two albums, this one doesn't have as much explosiveness, and instead makes a name for itself through sheer strength, musicality, and creativeness. With six 10s, three 9s, and one 7, almost all of the songs on here are outright awesome, with only one dipping below, and even then it's not a bad song by any means. Wow. Great stuff.

Song Rating Average: 9.4/10
Not including "The Hellion": 9.3/10

Both ratings are really accurate; I think I'll go with the former 9.4/10 score. Fantastic album, makes me wonder why I never listened to it in full before. Does Priest get any better than this? I doubt it...

1. "Screaming For Vengeance" - 10/10
2-3. "The Hellion" / "Electric Eye" - 10/10
4. "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" - 10/10
5. "Fever" - 10/10
6. "Devil's Child" - 10/10

7. "(Take These) Chains" - 9/10
8. "Riding On The Wind" - 9/10
9. "Bloodstone" - 9/10

10. "Pain and Pleasure" - 7/10

I get that, but a 5, to me, really just means a song is average. I consider 4 and below really negative. Even by using your way of reviewing, I'd still give the three songs fives. Just... average. Nothing too special but they aren't offensive at the same time.
That is not what I'm doing (and most others here). Nothing special, not offensive, average does not equal to five. If 5 is not negative and 4 really negative then your gap between 5 and 4 is too big. Make good use of the scale, of the available numbers. It isn't there for nothing. 6-10 for the positive ones (which includes what I said and if I understand you well: what you said about these songs), and 1-5 for the negative ones.
