Iron Maiden video interviews / shows

Doogie White had no credentials in 1993. In football terms it would be like Man Utd signing some guy who played for Acrington Stanley. BALZE!!11 at the time was playing for Villa or Everton.

EDIT: I don't think Doogie White has ever got up to an Everton or Villa level, maybe Sheffield Wednesday, bands that used to be good but are now far from the top tier.

I saw Doogie White play live about 10 years ago. It was a tiny club with about 10 people in attendance. He still performed live a pro though and did a couple of Dio numbers (this was shortly after Dio died).
Seems like a top guy and pro. No problem with how Blaze sounded on TXF and VXI just think Doogie would have suited the live stuff better. Water under the bridge now though and Doogie clearly holds no grudges.

Maiden went from Liverpool to Hartlepool United with Blaze though lol

I think Steve even made that same comparison at the time, he said something about nothing wrong with a player dropping down a few divisions at the end of their career if they still love the game.

Little did he know he was decades away from the end of his career, and was going to have more than a few title and European Cup wins before he hangs up his boots

Ah well they got their star striker back that's why

Nice comparison but Wolfsbane wasn't premiership club. I'd say they made their name as a lower league club in the FA cup, that was their peak.

Ooh Iron Maiden lineups and (classic) football formations, have we ever done that?

Smith and Dickinson are position 10 and 9 to me, and the club never gave any new member the same jersey after they left. It was kept in a vault, waiting for their triumphant return.

Wow - wild to see such a nonexistent stage set and such a tiny (for Nicko's standards) drum set! Thanks for sharing!

That's big compared to some of the places they were playing in the U.S. especially on the XFactour. Some of them were small nightclubs holding about 800 people by the looks of it. Tiny stages too. I think its another reason that had get rid of Blaze. They fell so far commercial during those years.

If you want to see the full Virtual XI stage show you should check the Trieste bootleg though, as not much is included in the Istanbul clip above. South American dates + North America never had the full thing featured either, so it's not very well known.

Virtual Xi Eddie featured on "Iron Maiden".

And as for the tour...things were going okay in Greece, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Turkey etc (much more than in the U.K and U.S)...and in South America they were booked to headline festivals, but sometime during the second half of '98, Steve agreed to that they had to change their singer.

800 people is not a small nightclub in my book.
I believe there are nightclubs in Europe that can hold few thousand people but those are multifloor dance clubs.

I still believe that Harris had a hunch or just knew from the rehearsal that it's going to be hard with Blaze. Then they had a Africa/Middle East start of the leg, smaller, distant shows but with a hungry audience, which is the usual pattern when known, popular band needs to tighten up but the tour is about to start and rehearsal time ran out. What I think people miss in the story is that promotion/booking for the NA leg was intentionally toned down due to Blaze not being able to recreate the classic Maiden set.

Thanks! I see this for the first time.
I'm not even sure I have any of the European bootlegs, I thought the definitive ones were SA and Montreal (Educated Fool played). This is a reason to go search for ones that captured the stage well.

Wow - they used TNOTB single cover as a backdrop for the song and for The Trooper! Curious to see such a small stage. Thanks for sharing.

Edit: I never thought I would see Nicko with such a tiny drum kit.
