Genghis Khan
Ancient Mariner
This is my first time hearing 'Wasting Love' live. Bruce has so much more power, clarity and emotion singing this song live. I'm a renewed fan (of the song).
Dude, after seeing this I realize that what has been said about Greek metalheads in those days is true. It was just another damn trend!!! Right now we've got exactly the same thing happening with emos. At least the metalheads now are true. That's why they're fewer .Forostar said:
Powergirl81 said:I have a question that maybe Forostar can answer. I listened to that totally awesome Sheffield bootleg from the SIT tour in 1986 (many thanks Zare!) and Bruce gives a nice intro to Wasted Years at the end of SIASL. He says something like, "We weren't originally going to call this song Wasted Years..." which totally surprised me. So now I wanna know what the original song title was! So when the clip for Wasted Years starts, all you hear is H belting out the intro! There's like a 10 second gap there where Bruce "might have" said what the name of the song was supposed to be...?
PM me Forostar and enlighten me with your knowledge! I can give you the clips for SIASL and WY if that would help...
Forostar said:@Genghis: Bruce's explanation about the song's lyrics also worked for me to appreciate it better, especially because the song kicks right in after that.
Genghis Khan said:His explanation is so unlike that of a typical rock star. Can you imagine any of the 'cock rock' artists saying anything remotely close to that? The band's maturity, like this Bruce example, is certainly reflected in their lyrics.
Powergirl81 said:Thank you so much Forostar! That makes sense too, because the chorus has both wasted years and golden years in it. So maybe H wrote the lyrics and got together with the band to discuss the song title. The fact it's only Smith and not Smith/Dickinson or Smith/Harris makes me believe he picked the title himself.
Forostar said:Only one gig earlier, in Leicester on the 14th of October 1986, Bruce says the following:
We were originally gonna call it "Golden Years". But we thought we can't really do that because David Bowie has got one and it sounds a bit like an invitation to a wedding anniversary, so instead we took the other word in the title and it's out on single. It's called "Wasted Years"!
It seems to be some sort of an admonition to appreciate the present and not take things for granted. It could also be a reflection on the World Slavery Tour, that really burned out the musicians of Iron Maiden to the point that a split of the band was feared at the time. It's obvious, though, that all that time was certainly not wasted, and that those were indeed Maiden's "Golden Years".

Off to bad now, cheers!
