0 "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg"
0 Nights of the Dead, Legacy of the Beast: Live in Mexico City

What a great round. Major step up from the last one.

The Number of the Beast is by far the most iconic Maiden album cover, deservedly so. Would probably be somewhere in my top 5.

Virtual XI gets shit on sometimes but I kinda think it's a banger. Kid wanders away from his footballer friends and puts on a headset to be transported away to a snarly, vicious looking Eddie who's performing scorched-earth genocide in Europe or some shit.

The CD 2 version of "Virus" has always been a cover that's stuck with me. I don't think it's good, or at least it shouldn't be good, but I really like it's crazy, distorted, cobbled-together look with Eddie as some kind of disease in a lab dish. Personally I find it pretty memorable but I won't be surprised if everyone else ignores it, especially since the competition is pretty good.

Live at the Rainbow is lots of fun, if a little simplistic (and what the hell is going on with Eddie's legs?); "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" is wild, pirate-esque Eddie ripping open his grave.

Which leaves Nights of the yadda yadda yadda. On its own, a decent cover, but I will never forget the feeling of hoping for a LOTB live album and on top of that hoping for them to use the Leg 2 tour poster which I thought was incredible. And then they actually released a LOTB live album, with the Leg 2 tour poster. But instead of it just being the poster, they went and edited it to fit the Mexico City theme, which made Eddie and the background uglier, and added a black vignette, cutting off most of the picture. That was already bad enough. Then the actual album itself was dogshit too. Fuck me, man. Goddamnit.

Difficult round, I really wanted to vote for Virus. Nights of the Dead is cool and slick but it's not very deep. Live at the Rainbow is nice too. Out of the studio album artworks, TNOTB is one of the best, maybe the very best even.

I love the Breeg artwork! NOTB is obviously iconic and will win, but Breeg is cooler.

Also, I agree that VXI is a bit unfairly maligned. It's a very detailed cover.

Quick update, this should be the corrected tally:

11 The Number of the Beast +2
7 "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" +3
4 Virtual XI +1
2 "Virus" [alt. 2]
0 Live at the Rainbow
0 Nights of the Dead, Legacy of the Beast: Live in Mexico City

@Shmoolikipod gave TNOTB 3 points but totaled 5 instead of 6.

11 The Number of the Beast
10 "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" +3
6 Virtual XI +2

2 "Virus" [alt. 2]
1 Live at the Rainbow +1
0 Nights of the Dead, Legacy of the Beast: Live in Mexico City

Finally a more interesting round!

I've always had a soft spot for Benny Breeg. I like the colour scheme, the atmosphere, the composition and the Eddie. Easy +3.
VXI gets a lot of hate for the soccer pitch, but I think it fits the theme pretty well. Bizarre Eddie design, but that's par for the course of the '90s Eddies.

Virus is a cool idea but also kinda ugly. NotD is pretty weak, though I enjoy the various details that reference different songs.

That leaves Rainbow and Beast. I was torn between them. TNotB is obviously iconic and I love the idea, but the Eddie is a bit too goofy for my tastes. Rainbow is a much simpler artwork, but I enjoy the way Eddie looks far more, so I had to give the third spot to that one.

Strong round!

Beast is iconic of course but still I gave the 3 points to Breeg which is just great. I hope it gets far in the game. For the 1 point it was a toss between Virtual XI and the alternative Virus cover.

I agree that Breeg is a strong cover, but 666 is also great. It’s very iconic. The Virtual XI cover is colorful, but to me it’s not Eddie on it — it’s his cousin Geddy, just like The Final Frontier has Freddy.

And Senjutsu has Teddy.
…A very unusual Teddy. The one who has a mouthful of sharp teeth, as they say. The one who’s heavily dentate. The one whose teeth are formidable. Heavily fanged Teddy Bear Eddie.
A light in the black? Ah, just the good old Fear of the Dark gleam of a big sharp fang.

First, it's an insult to real graphic artists to allow such things as Legacy of the Beast to compete. :D
That cover of "Virus" is really a failure, in my opinion, while the other one (the printed circuit board one) is quite good.
I put Live At The Rainbow over "...Breeg" because it has an element of magic to it (must be the aerograph ;) ). "...Breeg" is well made, but not really original (we had already had at least Live After Death and No Prayer For The Dying for "cemetaries at night" scenes).
Virtual XI could have been really pleasant, but without any inscription on the cover, in my opinion (I've never really accepted the clipped logo).

I think I did those votes right?

Number of the Beast needs no introduction. Breeg is one of only 3 or 4 post-Riggs-heyday classic covers (FOTD, BNW, Book of Souls, and to a lesser extent Riverboat Angel and the Gambler and Senjutsu which is great but too similar to Book of souls). I like the colour scheme of Rainbow which gives it the edge over VXI which is undoubtedly the second worst studio album cover. The other two are shit, with the Virus one a good contender for one of the worst ever.

Easy round to vote.

VXI is an underrated cover and Eddie (appreciate the colors and the details).
TNOTB is iconic (not in my Top 5 though), classic Eddie and the grey sky adds.
The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg is an idea they've already used, but the drawing and colors are strong (one of the best single covers since the 80's).

NOTD is just a re-use of a tour poster (which is bad imo) and somehow made a very good poster art weaker. Live At Rainbow has a good mix of colors and old Eddie, but it's not interesting enough. Virus's 2nd cover is one of my least favorites.

Agreed. Given the realms they used for the tour theme, I think NOTD could have been very interesting. Something like - Eddie from the tour (the big one, Trooper, or just the classic one with a costume) wandering/entering 3 worlds, all shown a little in the art in a dungeon probably. Now that would have been amazing and memorable.
