Iommi + Eurovision

I don't know, I guess people waving flags at occasions such as those don't have any ideas other than those you mentioned. I just feel uncomfortable with it because it is not only a symbol of the sports team, but also of the nation, so you can't always distinguish. Also, I just don't see why I should support athletes just because they're German. Shouldn't I support them when I am impressed by their feats, regardless of where they come from? Unfortunately, television doesn't seem to think so, because it only ever shows events where Germans participate and/or are good at. I'm just really uncomfortable with all this. It doesn't seem to be about the sports or the music at all, but about which nation is the greatest. Fuck that, honestly.

^ I know what you mean. I prefer to celebrate individual sportsmen and women ahead of nations. The vitriol around the Olympics last year got painful, and anyone who didn't go crazy celebrating Team GB or the 'triumph' that was the London Olympics was classed as an unpatriotic spoiler.
Different matter for me entirely when it comes to regional sport, though. Mainly because I think the region I come from needs support and some positive publicity

I have understanding for regional sports. Those teams are from your home place after all, and it's reasonable that you have an affection for them. But the country I come from is fairly big and diverse, and there are many places I have no affection for, and are stranger to me than London or Paris. Why bother with something from Bremen or Stuttgart? I've never even been there.

Oh wait, I've been to Stuttgart once. For a whole five hours.

Since I moved away I got less interested in the whole town v town rivalry thing, though, I can't be bothered hating Newcastle or Middlesbrough the way some people do, most people in the North East are very similar

No need to hate them for being a different sports team, who cares about that?

.... Just reserve all your hate for Lancashire because of who they are :D

I see. I guess showing sports in which Germans suck or do not even compete could turn the tide a bit.
But the Germans are (almost) everywhere. ;)
A big nation.

And what about athletes who are so impressive because of their performance or even behaviour? Then it truly does not matter anymore where they are from. I am thinking of Usain Bolt at the moment.

Not sure what you want to tell me here.

I was addressing this part:

The "problem" is that Germany is a great and big sport nation. It has lots of sporters and in most if not all sport categories. Often they are good as well. Maybe I'm wrong, but I have always had that idea.

edit:
So it's hard to change this. The media show what's happening. Maybe it's also the way they show it what makes it annoying for you.

Yeah, well, what I mean and what pisses me off is how even the TV announcers only ever root for German athletes and television really only shows the particular contests where Germans have a chance of winning and all that shit... seriously, I can't develop a passion for sports under these circumstances. Reminds me of the trenches in Flanders every single time.

The very worst example of this, I find, is the London-based media's treatment of Andy Murray. When he's doing well he's 'British'. As soon as he loses a game he's 'Scotsman Andy Murray'!

That kind of focus can be quite repetitive indeed. What about Eurosport. Maybe they follow a "Europe" program without German direction.

Even when I watched Eurovision, I didn't root for Serbia at all, because all our songs so far sucked ass. Stupid generic pop shit. Pretty much the best editions were the ones where Lordi and Terasbetoni participated IMO. I wish Keep Of Kalessin managed to win Norwegian contest, they were 2nd with this song:
:shred:

Not at all. German-only.

Then again, I don't watch sports, only when it's on at my parents' place, so what do I know.

I wasn't talking about the voting, but the idea in general. The same reason why I don't like World Cups or Olympics.

I see your point... to a point. I think you focus to much on the negative and how it can, indeed, deteriorate into unhealthy hatred of other countries rather than sportsmanlike rivalry. But overall, I rather have things like the Olympics and World Cups rather than World Wars, because I do think it still allows people to vent and celebrate in a healthy way and "defeat" your rival without killing anybody.

It's no doubt better than world wars, but I still don't like it.
