I'd like them to allow Simon to let rip on a bigger kit with some higher toms, a gong and possibly some double bass pedalling. That would be cool.

And yes, for fuck's sake change the damn soft-touch Caveman we've been stuck with for the last quarter of a century!

Probably the small kit is based on Smallwoods saving politics. Simon will be allowed getting a bigger kit only after he's hired safely for the future, otherwise it's considered a waste of money.

Possibly! I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it's not a huge investment, but the Sheriff of Huddersfield is a notorious skinflint!

Where are you getting this from? I sincerely doubt the size of the kit has anything to do with cost, Nicko's kit isn't a common setup, it's larger than most drummers would use or need. Maybe Simon's style doesn't necessitate the use of a larger kit. Again, he's not Nicko, he's Simon.

A similar example: Adrian recounts a story from his early days in the band when he arrived at a rehearsal with a small Vox AC-30 guitar amp and was immediately told to disregard it and plug into the massive Marshall stacks on stage. Greedy Rod didn't force H to use his smaller amplifier until it was clear he was there to stay to "save costs", and this was back when they had less money than they do now!

We all love Nicko here. And precisely because of that, there is no reason to subject him to something he can no longer do: play at his usual level. The stroke unfortunately cut his career short, and if the band decided to move on without him, then let it be done in full: with Simon as the new drummer both live and in the studio.

It was more a hoax of mine really.

I'm pretty sure that soft touch is the only kind of touch Steve will have in the studio, giggity.

As an aside, I'd be intrigued to hear a Shirley mix of Maidens albums, the extras he would do if Steve wanted it.

I think if you had Nicko on it it would just lead to disappointment on the tour, which as we all know is where they make 99% of their money. Reminds me a bit of Fleetwood Mac in the early 2000s when Christine McVie had left because she didn’t want to tour but she was open to being on the new album (which became Say You Will). Lindsay Buckingham said no that’s just too confusing, what happens if one of her songs becomes a big single and she’s not on the tour, it doesn’t work.

Keep it simple. Simon is the drummer now.

Just get him a decent looking drum kit.
