Iced Earth

wait, what? They were good, but they made the genre uninterestingworse?

Less interesting then. Of course that post was a very subjective one, but I really think they did. Most trash sounds to me like aggressive Iced Earth, but less good (thus less interesting) in about every way. Maybe a few trash bands have better guitar solos, but they're beaten in every other aspect.

and all other american acts worse?

Yes. No other US metal band made such powerful and strong metal with so many positive aspects as Iced Earth.

Not true.  Though the Pledge of Allegiance is common, or at least it was when I was in school.

Ah, OK- I wrongly assumed it would be the same as in Canada (although I knew about the Pledge of Allegiance).

Personally, I like the playing of the national anthem before sporting events.  It's a good tradition, and a little positive-minded patriotism never hurt anyone.  Though I also think that America the Beautiful or God Bless America would make much better national anthems.  The Star Spangled Banner is virtually impossible for the average person to sing well.  By the way, I thought Barlow's rendition was pretty good: straightforward and respectful, though it could have been a little crisper.

I don't think it hurts anyone either. Except for when Christina Agueliara does it apparently. Anyway.

I can't stand God Bless America. Atop that, what god blesses should have no place in the public sphere. I dislike the last lines of O Canada! for the same reason. And don't even get me started on the Pledge of Allegiance.

I sorta agree with you on IE, Foro. Some of their stuff is brilliant, putting other thrash acts to shame. They aren't that much better than Megadeth, but they're better.

Although I always feel that the music isn't that diverse at times, if that makes sense. Always galloping, always low notes, it gets pretty old if you listen to it too much at a time. That's why I generaly don't listen to whole IE albums at a time, unless I'm really in the mood for IE.

Well, I think there are still many unexpected tempo changes, and great build-ups of atmospheric calm parts, and lots of dynamic rhythm patterns.

Pretty much true.  They even sang it opening day at Little League this weekend, though not sure that'll continue throughout the season.  We also sing "O Canada" before games involving Canadian pro teams.

Personally I despise it, but hey, I'm not the one running things so whatever. I'd like to know when this whole singing the anthem started as it wreaks of 1950's commie paranoia like imprinting "In God we trust" on money to counteract those "atheist commies."

Well, that is seen differently in America. The anthem is sung at every sporting event, and every morning at school. I don't think it should be that way, but I respect it.
I can't imagine schoolchildren having to sing 'God Save the Queen' every morning in Britian. The Scottish Nationalists would be in uproar for a start.

It is sung at every sporting event but I've never sang it at school. I used to say The Pledge Of Allegiance but that was my first 3 years of school. But I also went to a school where we said "Our Father" before every subject  ::)

My grade 1 teacher made us say the "Our Father" prayer every day. I only recently realized how wrong of him that was. I was really angry about it for awhile, but then I realized, I came out OK anyway.

It's more the whole forcing a religion onto someone in a public class. Even back then I was only somewhat religious.

You know... Bible thumping aside, Catholic schools do have good programs. an agnostic friend of mine had philosophy classes when most public schools in the state don't. She, and her classmates, know more about Greek philosophy than most philosophy majors in a university. It was well rounded. Sure their are prayers here and their and of course their is bias, but still a better education than most schools.

Even at the university some of my most liberal professors were priests... I think they were overcompensating, but still.

Perun and LooseCannon. This thread is about Iced Earth, not religion in school. By the power that my mandate as Mod has given me, I urge you two to cease.  :P  :uhm:

... Or I will ban you.  :ninja: :ninja:  :D

Oh wait. *Hides from the wrath of Per and LC*

Stu Block is apparently the new singer. Never heard of him before but apparently he's a death metal vocalist? Could be interesting...
