Iced Earth

Ah, mob mentality.  Forced crowdsurfing for a moment there. :D  Though I really wouldn't have liked to be that guy, they could have beat him up pretty bad if he had done something worse.

I'm courently listenning to it for first time np: Sacrificial Kingdoms

I have to say that I'm completely thrilled, as it's my first listen, my opinion won't be very safe but I have the impression
of hearing the best IE album EVER (except 98's Something Wicked)

yes I agree with Foro, the first 9 track are more solid, but the rest kick asses as well !

I really don't like how there isn't much instrumental work on this album.  I mean, they have the best guitarist since Randall Shawvyer, and there's only 3 solos?????

I didn' even notice that -it doesn't really matters the number of solos, the album in his totallity rocks -keep that fact
and everything else is just statistics

Some songs are criminally under-developed.

I don't agree with you -this is a concept album -evn better : the 2nd serie of a trilogy, and it has to be viewed like this
it's just enormous ! I mean, what ? the 9th album of a band, and sounds so fresh, so inspired ?? hands off !!

oh I wish Maiden take a better listen to the huge effort that IE made through the years and learn from it

__
* some of you may noticed some repeats here and there some déjà-vu riffs, melodies etc etc
I too, but I don't really care, it was made originally, and with great inspiration behind

np : Epilogue, and still thrilled ! and easy 9.5 /10, despite everything that has been mentioned

So, Iced Earth is playing in my city tomorrow night.  Should I go?  I read Guinea Pig's review, and he plainly is a big fan who enjoyed the show.  I am someone who is somewhat familiar with, and generally likes, what I have heard from Iced Earth, but would not consider myself a big fan -- basically, I have Alive in Athens and the Blessed and the Damned compilation, and that's it.  Do they put on a good show that someone who recognizes less than half the songs (and doesn't really know the lyrics) would appreciate?  Tickets are only about $35 including fees, and I would probably otherwise spend the night just watching a DVD, so I'm tentatively inclined to go.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Heck, I'd go just to see what kind of show they put on.  $35 is cheap enough to not worry about.  Maybe if you like them enough live, you'll be a bigger fan!  Hope you enjoy.

I'd say definitely - they put on a great show, was really enjoyable and memorable for me.  The energy at the gig I went to was through the roof, and even if you don't know the lyrics, Iced Earth is one of those bands who you can chant very easily to (sorta like Maiden in that respect).  However, before you went, I'd at least hit up youtube and listen to a couple of the songs from The Glorious Burden, Framing Armageddon, and the Crucible of Man they'll play.

I know for my concert, the majority of the people hadn't heard any of The Crucible of Man yet (as it was released the morning of the concert in Montreal!) but they were still very receptive of it.

If you want to listen to the songs they'll probably play from the albums you haven't heard, I've included links to them in the spoiler tags:
(The Glorious Burden)
Declaration Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6O0a7l5M44
Hold at All Costs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh1dOl1GZ7k
High Water Mark - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh6M4jBd ... re=related

(Framing Armageddon)
Motivation of Man/Setian Massacre - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxfOvF5DDCs
10000 Strong - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyU3rhBfdoo

(The Crucible of Man)
Behold the Wicked Child - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsDJLJGfn2s
I Walk Alone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDPvDQS19PQ
Come What May - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f-ad_gQ ... re=related

The setlist has been changed around a bit so this list may be overcomplete or incomplete.

But I would definitely not miss this concert.  Iced Earth is definitely a great live band.

What an understatement.

In my opinion, Iced Earth is the third best metal band in the world, after Iron Maiden and Blaze.

I agree as well, only I put Iced Earth on spot number 3, right after Maiden and Priest (in undecided order).

However, I think Iced Earth will have to fight to keep that status, considering how Framing Armageddon rips Crucible of Man in every sense of the word. Jon Schaffer doesn't seem to be able to come up with that much new riffs. Many riffs sound quite similar (that counts partially for Framing Armageddon too, but great vocallines and Ripper's presence makes it less important). I just listened to Crucible of Man but I turned it off after half the album. I got too bored and I'm now listening to Framing Armageddon. I will give it a whole spin tomorrow though. But this is worrying, considering I never skip any songs on either Framing Armageddon, Dark Saga, Something Wicked, Glorious Burden, Horror Show (well...) And certainly not on Alive in Athens.

I disagree with you. I think Crucible of Man is better than Framing Armageddon.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. But I'm just curious, do you actually think Jon's riffs are better on Crucible of Man than on i.e Dark saga or Something Wicked?

No, I don't think so. Crucible Of Man is a good, perhaps even great album (and to remind you, I like Framing Armageddon too), but nowhere near Dark Saga, Burnt Offerings, Something Wicked or Night Of The Stormrider.

Third best IN THE WORLD? Yeah right... there are PLENTY of better bands out there. They are definitely top 10, but that's it.
