Ugh, that song is almost worse than When the Eagle Cries... I also honestly don't think that Ripper is that good.

Taste differ. I like the song. When The Eagle Cries however is shit.
But honestly, I've ever really heard three singers who can do distorted high screams really really good. That's Halford, Ripper and then Ralf Scheepers. Matt isn't that good with heights (at least, it's much more obvious that he uses falsetto), his strength lies in the low and middle range.

Well, that's good if you like that sort of distorted high scream. I prefer low and mid-range voices.

The thing with Ripper is, I think he has a good melodic singing voice, as demonstrated on tracks such as Valley Forge, A Charge to Keep, and also a fairly powerful shouting voice, as on I Don't Need This, which he should work on more. Instead, he keeps annoying me with his shrieks that are neither very original, nor very pleasant to listen to. I never understood where the appeal is in having an entire song shrieked (or, as you would say, done in falsetto); I can only tolerate it when the rest of the song is good, musically.
There is a difference, if the screaming and shrieking is part of the song's progression, as on Aces High. What I mean to say is, it's all about the good measure, and not just for the sake of doing something that is technically impressive. The thing is, you can hit all the high notes you want, and it may be an impressive feat, but it just doesn't sound very good.

The above is, of course, only my opinion, and I'm getting tired of writing a disclaimer on it every time, so just take it as that from now on.

See, taste differs.  :D
I also love Tim's middle range. Listen to "The Clouding" for some really good mid range stuff.

I seem to remember there was an unresolved conflict between Perunesia and Yaxilia anyway.

Edit: Is there going to be a flaming war between the Ripper and Barlowe camps? And did I start it intentionally with that question? Hmm...

That's happened more often in the past. ;)

Anyone forgotten my difference of opinion with Raven (and others), starting in the IE-topic at 29-07-07 (reacting on a 27-07-07 Raven post), continuing til mid August of that same year?

Natalie, if you like to read negative opinions on Iced Earth, Jon Schaffer & Ripper vs someone who thought some of that was prejudiced, enjoy. Others who hate to see extremely different views, better skip it.

Sorry Per, I just replaced your quote with Natalie's.

Yes indeed old, but I remember it like it was last week.

Actually, I didn't want to start a flame war. I like Ripper, and I like a lot of his work with Iced Earth. I still prefer Barlow. If that makes me a nazi, so be it.

Forgotten? Like I ever remembered it...

I rarely remember what I post myself - why would I recall something you posted, especially over two years ago? :P

I remember it. Shit, has it been two years already? Time flies by so fast.  :(

My favourite two albums are their 2nd "Night of the Stormrider" (which is fucking awesome while driving the car, I can really recommend that!) and their 3rd "Burnt Offerings". Both albums show a different side of the band.

...

In the end all IE-albums with Barlow are worth getting. They are all quite different, though I find Dark Saga and SWTWC more alike than the other works.

Seems like you're referring to the Matt Barlow re-releases of these albums, rather the originals.  (Maybe not.)  Either way, and this question is directed to the group as much as Foro:  Which do you prefer/recommend?  (Don't say "listen to both," that's too easy, plus I don't illegally download, so I'd rather buy once.)  I have Days of Purgatory, which contains the Barlow recordings.

Not. Maybe I expressed myself wrong. I am fond of all IE albums apart from The Glorious Burden and Something Wicked, but I have certain favourites:

These three:

"Night of the Stormrider" is really worth getting, even if Barlow is not singing on it. This previous singer doesn't have the warmth and emotion of Barlow but his way of singing/screaming fits the music perfectly.

Just as well rewarding is imo the debut album of Barlow, "Burnt Offerings".

Most rewarding might be their live set "Alive in Athens" which has a very strong mix and tons of great songs.

My Favorite is Burnt Offerings, great album. While not in my top 3 Horror Show is really good thanks to Wolf... Dracula is really good too, oh and the one inspired on the creature of the blue lagoon... Phantom Opera Ghost is awesome! hmm... maybe it is in my top 3 after all...
