November Rain is a brilliant song. I've probably said this before, but one of my absolute favorite GN'R moments ever is the "Lovers always come" section. Absolute magic. NR is one of the only songs in this top 10 that actually made my top 10. Only Estranged (#2), NR (#8), and Rocket Queen (#4) made my top 10.

November Rain's great, but Estranged is different. I think Estranged is the better song (and I prefer it) just because it's more organic. And though this song is supposed to be Axl's baby (and he certainly has amazing vocals on it, particularly during the "I see the storm is getting closer" bits), I think Slash steals the show overall. What brilliant riffs he came up with. I could listen to the guitar part right after the "You came in this world alone, alone" line forever. Just powerful, soulful guitar. This might be a minority opinion, but I also think the two solos eclipse his NR solos (which are also extraordinary).

I'm rambling. Sorry. :p Point is, this is a great top 2. I saw both songs live back in March and I have to say Axl sucks at singing both of them. Despite that, Estranged really moved the crowd (including me). It must've been everybody's favorite song lol. The guy next to me started crying. It was cute.

I knew Slash's licks on Estranged were going to be special when they were mentioned in the liner notes. It really is Axl's baby but it wouldn't be the same without Slash's playing. Can't imagine seeing it with someone else on guitar.

I kinda wish Slash got songwriting credits for it, but the liner notes were probably enough.

That's what I love about Axl's and Slash's working relationship, though. Coma was supposed to be Slash's baby, but Axl stole the show for me; likewise, Estranged was Axl's baby, but Slash stood out. They brought out the best in each other. Such a shame their relationship went the direction it did. They seemed like they had a strong bond, yet all it took was a series of misunderstandings and two bruised egos to erode it.

The outro of Coma especially. You have Slash tearing it up in the background, but it's Axl's mix of bitterness and empathy in his delivery that really makes the outro worthwhile.

I think they will bury the hatchet eventually, but I think the ball's in Slash's court. Axl basically said once Slash "apologizes" for the "lies" he told (which I've no doubt he fibbed about Axl a bit in the media, though probably not to the extent Axl thinks he did), Axl would be willing to consider a reunion. Then again, he also told someone who asked about a reunion, "Not in this lifetime." :(

Whoops I'm ranting. I blame them for being so frustrating.

In all honesty those 2 are comparable to so many relationships, they bring out the best in each other when they were working together but they are also capable of bringing out the worst in each other for the same reasons. Both very strong willed which is great when that will is in the same direction, but it's a fragile balance. This is something I myself know only too well. In a similar fashion again, like all of these 'explosive' (in so many ways) relationships after it has broken down...there's been so much back and forth throughout the years that there's no real knowing what's the truth any more and I doubt either can remember either.

I agree that Axl steals the show for Coma, Estranged I would find in Slashes favor but ony slightly.. it's him at the start, but the ending is half and half. November Rain is another tough one, that 3rd solo is fantastic but so is Axl's vocal work throughout.

I have seen November Rain but not Estranged :(

These two are also my favorites from the band. I can't decide which one to vote for, so I'll listen to both and the one that strikes me the most today will get the nod.

Edit : November Rain's ending is killer but Estranged really is the best work of the band.

November Rain

It was an incredibly hard decision, and I decided to just take the plunge and vote instead of deliberate further. Both are SO good, and I adore every single part of Estranged, listening to it again now I even find little bits that slipped from my memory..... but I had to vote in favour of November Rain because of emotional attachment in the end more than anything else.

Definitely happy with how this turned out. My two favorite songs won :D

In fact, the top 4 would probably match mine. Paradise City is way too high, but besides that it's a near perfect top ten.

Meh. I'm glad Estranged won (#2 on my list), but this list is way too Appetite-heavy, and I was kinda hoping TWAT would make the top 10 (though I knew it didn't have a prayer :p).

This survivor was super fun, though. Thanks for hosting, Mosh. :) I especially enjoyed not being the only one having a meltdown over Coma's elimination.

Not satisfied. Nightrain is a song that I really would have higher. It's my number 1 and I thought it was more popular than its current position. In the previous survivor in 2010 it became 4th and November Rain became 8th, but we had less softies around back then. :D

The song has a neat build-up and such a great drive and chorus. Its guitar solos and riffs (especially the one in the chorus is the best GNR riff hands down) make it in my view more impressive than the rest. Then again, I would rate more Appetite songs higher than these two dramatic piano ballads. When Appetite came out I was very impressed. And when the Use Your Illusions came out I was disappointed.

By the way, in an early phase, Nightrain was almost eliminated, so maybe I should be happy with the outcome. ;)

Thanks for hosting Mosh!

I'm satisfied with the results, although Patience is one of my least favorite GnR tracks. Switch Coma with Patience and you have my top ten. (not in the correct order, but close)

Yes, absolutely.

My number one landed on fourth place, my number two won, my number three got the same spot here.

Thanks, Mosh.

Well, I voted for November Rain to win but would've rather neither won.. however I am still happy because I think the top 10 is strong regardless of whether it matches my own. Although I think that probably had like a 75% chance of being true regardless of what ended there :P Such is the diversity and strength of the material imho.

I'm glad Patience/Civil War/Rocket Queen/Estranged/November Rain are up there... but meltdown over Coma's loss indeed... RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!
