I love Mastodon, but I don't get all the praise
Leviathan usually gets. I understand it raised some feathers when it came out, but retrospectively looking I just don't understand why people rank it as their best. I've listened it again yesterday and OK, it has some good parts, but everything I'v heard on that album seems like a prototype of what they've been doing after that. IMO, there isn't a single thing on that album that hasn't been done much better on the later albums. On the other hand, Rammstein's
Mutter not only cemented Rammstein as one of the main acts at that time, but stood the test of time. Those first 5 songs are still regularly played live and are still considered one of their best. While on this topic - Rammstein videos. I remember seeing
Sonne for the first time on MTV and all that depressing aura it had around it. AFAIK, to this day, Rammstein are the last metal band that still gives a damn about their music videos and that's a thumb up from me. The rest of singles/videos on Mutter were also great: Ich Will, Links and Feuer Frei which made me at one point I even considered watching Vin Diesel's "xXx"
(SPOILER: I didn't watch xXx,. Instead, I watched a lot of XXX at the time.) WINNER:
Mutter
Here and there I used to stumble on some Gojira's song a gave it a listen. Not a single time, or a moment within single song made me want to listen something theirs. And it was the same this time when I pressed play which made me conclude to avoid 'em from now on. Truth be told, I only know like 3-4 songs from this album but still WINNER:
Superunkown
Black metal definitely isn't my type, although there are some good moments. Also, Tool. Not my favorite album of theirs but definitely WINNER:
Fear Inoculum. And same goes for the next pair. WINNER:
Moving Pictures.
Gojira blew Opeth off the stage when I saw them together.
That's OK, I guess. It would be way worse if Gojira blew Opeth on the stage.
