GREATEST METAL ALBUM CUP - Winner: Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Be'Lakor squeaks past Dream Theater. Lots of Dream Theater left, but none right now. They're back in League 6.
Although I voted for DT and prefer Systematic Chaos I really don't mind Be'Lakor wining. What they lack in originality they sure have in quality and punch. And it's also cool to see other than the same old style bands being appreciated here.

King Diamond - Good stuff, need to check out more of King Diamond

Testament - Why is a distinctive and original Thrash vocalist trying to copy bro-dude dickhead vocals?

King Diamond
with the win.

Ayreon - no interest in this

Queensryche - opinion given before

Queensryche with the win

Avenged Sevenfold - Opening riff is stolen from Heartwork, I said this before about them, I'm not sure whether that reflects badly on them or me, do I only have one reference point for that style of music or do they only steal from one source? This is pretty much the same as all their stuff that's been in the game, individual sections are ok but the overall mish mash doesn't work for me. The less polished production does wonders for them.

Iron Maiden - opinion given before, chosen track is fantastic

Iron Maiden with the win

Dissection - Music is alright but production sounds like dogshit.

Deep Purple - opinion given before

Deep Purple haven't murdered anyone as far as I know so it's a fairly easy win

Hate King Diamond and am neutral to Testament, so the first choice is obvious.

I strenuously dislike Queensryche whereas I really love Universal Migrator (and the first part possibly even more than the second one), so my choice is obvious.

I actually like A7x a lot, but TFF is an unfairly underappreciated album. The second half, beginning with Avalon, is just sublime. Even Bruce's strained vocals can't put me off that one.

I don't hate Dissection, but even the "beer gut" reunion era Deep Purple have worth to me. This particular album brings some really sweet memories. Knocking at Your Back Door is cheese personified, but I always couldn't help but really like it. The title track, the pentatonic mysteriousness of Hungry Daze... just love the album, really.

Three of these matchups are one-sided: Maiden, Purple and Queensryche with easy and obvious wins, IMO.
The first matchup is closer, only because it's hard for me to figure out which vocal style I hate more. I don't know why anyone would want to listen to King Diamond sing. It's not even singing, it's just out-of-tune falsetto shrieking. It doesn't sound evil, it just sounds silly. But I cannot reward Testament for employing death-metal-style growls.

This. Thank you for this.

Why the fuck would anyone want to listen to King Diamond - outside of the admittedly great Mercful Fate context, even?

Seriously, WHY DO YOU WANT SMURFS IN YOUR METAL???

Honest response: even if King Diamond isn’t the greatest singer in metal, he’s got a certain sense of charming no one else does. To me, he sounds like an apparition arising from the graves to tell stories from the ghostly word. And in Mercyful Fate he sounds fucking demonic. He’s not the gold standard of singing but he adds dimensions to the genre of metal like no one else. Again, just my opinion. My girlfriend says he sounds like Elmo.

P.S. Andy LaRoque is such a fucking great guitarist and he makes King Diamond even better. And the duo of Denner / Shermann is one of the BEST in all of metal. Fucking same level as Tipton / Downing and just a notch below Murray / Smith. Point being: I listen to these two for more than just the vocals, even though I do appreciate said vocals.

Didn't expect Dissection to get smoked like this. Kind of a shame. There's some excellent Fates Warning/early Iron Maiden sounding melodies on those first two albums of theirs. Storm probably is a better album. Nights Blood, Thorns of Crimson Death (any bass fans here?), MOTHERFUCKIN SOUL REAPER and Retribution/Storm of the Lights Bane all kill. Just a great album. Hallmark of Swedish heavy metal

First of all because they smurf.
Second of all because the smurf of the smurf is so great when adding a smurf to it. Unless you dislike smurfs but that´s not the keysmurf here.
Third of all because without smurfs there would be less room for smurfs to smurf the music.
Fourth of all because you can´t judge a smurf by its smurf. It´s very rude and unsmurfworthy to do such a smurf. When you don´t smurf this, what´s the point of smurfing around on this forum?

Little smurfer little one
Made my heart come all undone
Do you love me, do you smurfer girl
Smurfer girl my little smurfer girl

I have watched you on the shore
Standing by the ocean's roar
Do you love me do you smurfer girl
Smurfer girl smurfer girl

We could ride the smurf together
While our love would grow
In my Woody I would take you everywhere I go
So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
Do you love me do you smurfer girl
Smurfer girl my little smurfer girl

One of King Diamond's best records against one of Testament's least exciting albums? Easy.

The first half of Universal Migrator is everything The Source isn't: inventive, exciting, varied and outside the box. And since I'm not a fan of Tate and company pre Rage For Order I'll give this one to Ayreon.

Avenged Sevenfold are... Avenged Sevenfold. The Final Frontier is really decent Iron Maiden most of the time (but still featuring some top notch tracks). Once again easy pick.

Purple's reunion did spawn one really great track and a couple decent others but Dissection's sophomore is simply a 90's extreme music landmark, revered by both critics and fans alike and one hell of an exciting record.
