Ghost

Track is similar to the last one, I enjoy the old school sound and it's good to see that some of the themes of Twenties and Hunter's Moon off the last album aren't being followed through with, but I wasn't exactly rushing to replay it either

First night setlist.

I'm surprised at the lack of Spillways, and to a less but bigger for me, Watcher in the Sky.

So, Ghost were phenomenal. We got in and got beer literally seconds before they started. The show was thankfully delayed because of the queue problems (caused by the no-phones policy). If you're going to a show on this tour, show up early.

But fuck me, Maiden have their work cut out to beat a stage show like this. It reminded me a little of LOTB as the middle section of the set had giant cathedral windows. But it was screens so unlike LOTB, there wasn't a 10 minute changeover.

As usual with Ghost, the new album is super listenable. It leans into that AOR/pop metal sound. Almost every track kicks off with a short synth or synthwave intro—it really sets this moody, nostalgic '80s vibe.

(All ratings are within Ghost’s own universe—Prequelle is still my favorite from them.)
01. Peacefield – 5/5
02. Lachryma – 4.5/5
03. Satanized – 3.5/5
04. Guiding Lights – 5/5 → Power ballad, but feels too short for what it builds up to.

05. De Profundis Borealis – 5/5 → In the first half, there’s this wailing, crying guitar that feels very Maiden—like something off Brave New World. Later on, it shifts into full-blown Seventh Son territory—there’s even a literal quotation in there!

06. Cenotaph – 5/5 → Starts off like Priest’s Dissident Aggressor, then out of nowhere turns into some galloping AOR hit song.

07. Missilia Amori – 3.5/5 → don't know why but i perceive this song as a Def Leppardian (maybe because of rockets)
08. Marks of the Evil One – 4/5
09. Umbra – 4.5/5 → cowbell Hammond organ orgy.
10. Excelsis – 3.5/5

Songs 7–10 don’t stand out to me as much.
Overall, I think I like this one more than Impera. That said, it's definitely their most pop album to date. Those short synth snippets are probably the biggest novelty—it adds this feeling of melancholy and something bigger, just beyond the horizon. And 5th song is a clear tribute to Maiden!

edit:
and one more thing. this album is certainly better produced than any latest Maiden album
edit2:
07. Missilia Amori /// 08. Marks of the Evil One /// 09. Umbra is growing on me.

I enjoyed the new album on my first listen and I agree it falls off quite a bit in the second half (except for Umbra).

Overall, it’s fun. I think I like it more on the first listen than the last album, but I don’t think it has the same caliber of standout tracks.

I continue to be impressed by Fredrik Åkesson’s versatility.

The best Ghost album in my opinion. Umbra and Marks of the Evil One!!!
And De Profundis Borealis = DoD/AMOLAD Maiden if we talk about drums+bass (chorus is similar to pre-chorus of The Pilgrim). :D

The fans seem to rate this quite low. I think it is bloody brilliant. I don’t care it doesn’t sound like a usual Ghost song. The way the full chorus chord progression isn’t used until the final chorus is genius. The instrumental makes me smile as well.

I'm confused, don't you hear 7th Son coda in that song. It's there.
