I guess it's the interval between G and B that is one half step less then when you tune the rest of the strings? Basically when you check your tuning by ear using intervals you have to press one fret lower then with the rest.
Or the fact that G is somewhere in between the "thick" and "thin" so sometimes it ends up being wound, and sometimes it's smooth..
G is my favourite guitar string because you can do that bend-harmonic thing by pressing on it above the nut - like what Janick does on live versions of FOTD :)
 
B.A.B: I thought you can do that with any string.
Depends which guitar you have - on a Strat it definitely works best on the G string on account of it having the longest uniterrupted length between nut and machine head, the highest clearance from the headstock, and also the weight of the string. Brought all together means you can get more bend and stustain doing this with the G string than any other.
