Favorite bands

Time for an update.

The Allmen
Blue Öyster Cult (and the Band)
Creedence
Dream Theater
Elton (and sometimes Earth, Wind & Fire)
Funkadelic & Parliament
Grateful Gead
the Highwaymen, including their solo work (yup, I just did that... but also The Hollies... Humble Pie and Hawkwind at times)
Chicago (indeed, ch is a letter in Czech)
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest (also Joe Satch)
Kendrick
Lynyrd (also LedZep when I’m in the mood for Robert)
Midnight Oil (also Mastodon, sometimes)
Nazareth
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (also Oldfield)
Police
Queen (sometimes, at least)
The Rolling Stones
Steely Dan (also Symph X or Seventh Wonder, but the Danners are the best)
Thin Lizzy
U2 (so sue me. Also, Underworld)
Vai
The Who
Yes
ZZ Top (from time to time - only the originals without the 80’s production, though)

I’m leaving out the jazzmen, just because.

This was actually much easier than I thought. No stretches, even, really. Only X is missing. Well, maybe I'll learn to like XTC or something, no such luck yet.

As soon as I saw the alert I knew that these were gonna be the first two artists in your list. :D
Only because Bellowhead are no longer active though: if I'd been posting that pre-May 2016 then they would have come before Alestorm in the top list, instead of top of the second one :).

4 months later: A little earthquake. For the first time since I am into Maiden and Priest (early nineties), another band entered the top 2.

Bad Religion climbed two positions. So many fantastic songs. More than Priest.

01. Iron Maiden
02. Bad Religion
03. Judas Priest

04-06. Bruce Dickinson / Black Sabbath / Midnight Oil
07. Rush
08. Nightwish
09. Helloween
10. Iced Earth

Not sure where they sit in a list but certainly these two bands have enjoyable discographies:
Jethro Tull
Hawkwind

(In the last years I heard their music much more often than Nightwish, Helloween and Iced Earth, and as a bonus I'm beginning to understand better how influential these bands have been).

Iron Maiden (the forum)
Rush (the avatar)
Evergrey (the member name)

Honourable mentions: Marillion (Fish era), Dream Theater, XTC, Queensryche, Enchant.

This has changed many times over the years, but my top two have been the same for quite some time: Symphony X and Opeth. Don't ask me which one I prefer, because it changes with my mood. Both have devolved heavily over the years, but their classic catalogues stand unopposed.

Second-tier to me include Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, and Metallica. All of been consistent enough throughout the years, but never reaching the heights of my top two. Hell, I might even throw the beautifully cheesy Sabaton in there for their propensity to always put me in a great mood despite their grisly subject matter.

I would probably echo the same, though at this point in life I’d rank Maiden and Dio (his entire metal discography, not just the solo band) up there. Top 10 would probably be, in no particular order:

Symphony X
Opeth
Iron Maiden
Dio (all Dio-fronted groups)
Clutch
Dream Theater
Metallica
Rush
Sabaton
Armored Saint, Kamelot, or Nightwish (depending on my mood)

11 October 2010:

04. Metallica/Slayer (can't decide)
06. Helloween/Gamma Ray (can't decide)

23 September 2011
Another big update:
1. Iron Maiden

Update:
1. Iron Maiden

3. Megadeth
4. Slayer
5. Judas Priest
6. Amon Amarth
7. Kreator
8. Metallica
9. Helloween
10. Gamma Ray

22 May 2015
3 years later...
1. Iron Maiden
2. Iced Earth
3. Slayer
4. Amon Amarth
5. Opeth
6. Blind Guardian
7. Gamma Ray
8. Helloween
9. Anaal Nathrakh
10. Kreator

5 years later...

  1. Ayreon / Star One
  2. Iron Maiden
  3. Iced Earth (with Barlow)
  4. Opeth (until 2008)
  5. Amorphis (2006-present)
  6. Bloodbath (until 2008)
  7. Mastodon
  8. Swallow The Sun
  9. Anaal Nathrakh
  10. Amon Amarth (until 2011)
  11. Hypocrisy
  12. Septicflesh
  13. Enslaved (2010-present)
  14. Primordial (2007-present)
  15. Ensiferum (until 2004)

I'm only really certain that the Top 4 bands are the actual Top 4, probably not always in that order, depending on my mood. The rest are also fairly interchangeable. It also seems that the pattern is that over time all power and thrash metal bands disappeared from my favorite bands list :D

Btw. I'm just clarifying which eras of these bands make them my favorite bands. For example, Iced Earth's era with Stu would not make it into my list, but Iced Earth's era with Barlow would. Also, Opeth's era after 2008, or more accurately starting with Heritage, would definitely not make them my favorite band. Same goes for Amon Amarth's last 3 albums, or anything Ensiferum did after the first two albums, etc.
