I haven't heard the latest yet, and to be honest I don't know Eclipse either, I think.

I really like Silent Waters, a lot of good melodies. Their current singer is a very strong vocalist, live and he does the old tracks well too. About 4 years ago, I saw them performing, and I was impressed.

I still prefer the two first albums the most, and have played Elegy also pretty often when it came out.

Well, I don't know if they've released anything since Skyforger, but Eclipse is great. I like it more than Silent Waters. Skyforger is a REALLY good album as a stand alone, but taking the previous two albums into consideration it does seem stagnant.

Here's one of my favorite tracks from Eclipse:
Brother Moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoHWQyLXK7Q&feature=related

And here is my current favorite from Skyforger:
Sampo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wRUMjy8p_M

I don't know what to call their current sound. Not really death, not really prog... very Piano laden... I've dubbed it "moody metal" lol. It's just chill and laid back, love it.

Silent Waters

Man I am getting really into this album again. To be honest, I never bought it, but now I've borrowed it from a collegue at work.

Favourite tracks of the moment:

A Servant
Shaman

I guess you notice my likings for such guitar melodies. Kind of old school Amorphis. But I like most of the rest as well!

I just think it's funny that there is something serious people refer to as "Viking Metal."  It may or may not be excellent music, but the name just sounds absurd.

All magazine inventions. Viking Metal, Atmospheric Metal, Melodic Melancholic Atmospheric Gloomy Doomed Most Evil and Darkest Metal - It all means shit. Pathetic. Ridiculous.

It may sound a little absurd, but there is actually a pretty big number of bands in that genre. Most of them are Norwegian and Swedish black metal bands who have lyrics related to Norse mythology, Viking history anti-Christianity and pagan lore, and slight musical folk influences. In other words, they are too "black" to be referred to as folk metal and too "folkish" to pass as ordinary black metal. You run into trouble when trying to distinguish them from pagan metal, which is actually a very big underground scene in many parts of Europe. The differences are mostly from the background of the bands and their lyrics, musically they are often indistinguishable.
I know some people who are in a pagan metal band, and lots of people who are very much into this stuff, so I can assure you it's far from being a hoax or a magazine invention. However, it is likely that many people outside of northern and central Europe are unaware of the reality of Viking/pagan metal.
Singing about Vikings does not suffice to pass as a Viking metal band. Nobody taking the genre seriously will count Amon Amarth in, even though they are very heavy on that Viking image, heavier than some "actual" Viking metal bands. The same goes for power metal bands like Stormwarrior. "Real" Viking metal bands would be Unleashed, Windir, Kampfar, Manegarm or Einherjer.
Pagan metal as a whole is a problematic case, because it is a glorification of pagan past, and is often an overly-romanticised picture that is far detached from reality. Most pagan bands are unpolitical, but some aren't. And when they are political, you can guess what corner you will find them in. Some notable pagan metal bands would be Odroerir, Varg, Svarga and Heidevolk (I particularly recommend the latter).

Stoner Metal?! WTF?

Directly influenced by early Black Sabbath this is a very slow-moving and rather quiet (by metal standards) type of music. It's very hard to describe, but it is a very distinct genre. Basically, you can also call it "sludge metal" (although that term is also reserved for some things I would not classify as "stoner").

I didn't know that disagreement is disrespect. For fuck's sake, respect my right to disagree. The great irony is that you just disagreed with me about Metallica on the other forum and I'm really, really fine with that.

I recommend you look into CATHEDRAL, really good "stoner" metal.

No, it's not.

It depends. When I was first getting into metal the sub genres were VERY helpful. Now I don't care as long as it's a good band, so yeah, now I don't find it too helpful.

Such a good album. I've been binging on eclipse, silent waters and skyforger... LOVE what they do with the piano.

It is if all you say to somebody else's opinion is "no, it is not" without any reasoning or argument to back it up. You can't expect them or anybody else to know just like that why you disagree with them.

I'm fine with disagreeing, but I get pissed when people express their absolute disagreement with three words.  In the Metallica thread, I didn't say "Yes, Black Album is decent", I said "Yes, Black album is decent because ..."  I know you can explain your opinion when you feel like it (see: case AMOLAD), and a few sentences backing up your opinion hardly takes too much effort.

But, I'll admit I overreacted a bit to your post, and I apologise for that.

I explained why labels aren't helpful and why they confuse and segregate the Metal genre. It's on the earlier postes on this thread. I just didn't want to write all over again. I thought you had read the whole thread. No prob, anyway.

Sorry, I missed that.  I'd tend to agree with you on this, anyway.  One of the most ridiculous genres I've heard is "extreme power metal", referring only to Dragonforce. <_<
