European Politics

The EU is trapped in some of their own rules. To punish a state (severely) needs support from all other states. That is tough when bastard nations stick and support each other. Reforming these rules could be pretty important, but it is probably not easy and it needs to be done carefully I suppose.

I would be interested in knowing which ones are the bastard nations in the EU.

Each state has certain freedom to regulate several domains in respect of which the EU legal framework did not impose restrictions (same in case of the restrictions in Northern Ireland).
Certain freedom eh? I hope that'd be more specific. And indeed not against universal human rights.

I also wouldn't call them bastard countries. National self-determination is another very important concept. I might disagree with them and question why the EU expanded to some countries that don't share the same commitment to human rights that the core EU nations have, but at the same time, there's an easy historic explanation too.

In general, countries with strong xenophobic sentiments. Especially those who (especially recently) have introduced xenophobic laws making it more difficult than it already was for immigrants, people of different or without religion, LGBT, and of different race. And I also dislike it when goverment uses media and justice for their own agenda (propaganda). Countries who oppress minorities, in short.

IMO, marriage is an option, not a right. It is hard to determine whether imposing certain restrictions on this concept impacts the human rights principles.

I agree with those sentiments. However, you still have not named any of those countries ticking those boxes that are EU members. ;)

I guess their priorities lie elsewhere than in dealing with things that do not sit well with the EU goals and values.
Not today! Better use of money decided EU has.

Turkey: MEPs cut support by €70m due to no improvement in respect for EU values

Parliament on Tuesday decided to cancel €70 million in pre-accession funds earmarked for Turkey, as conditions to improve the rule of law were not met.

Last November, during the budgetary negotiations, Parliament and Council decided to place in reserve €70 million in pre-accession funds for Turkey (€70m in commitments and €35m in payments), under the condition that “Turkey makes measurable, sufficient improvements in the fields of rule of law, democracy, human rights and press freedom, according to the annual report of the Commission.”

However, the European Commission’s annual report on Turkey, published on 17 April 2018, concluded that “Turkey has been significantly moving away from the European Union, in particular in the areas of the rule of law and fundamental rights and through the weakening of effective checks and balances in the political system”.

The condition set by the budgetary authority has therefore not been met, MEPs underline.

They accordingly support the draft amending budget 5/2018, in which the Commission proposes transferring the €70 million earmarked for Turkey to reinforce the European Neighbourhood Instrument. This would be done through commitments– to cover actions linked to the Central Mediterranean migratory route and to fulfil part of the EU pledge for Syria – and to boost Humanitarian Aid by €35 million.

The report by Siegfried Muresan (EPP, RO) has been adopted with 544 votes, 28 against and 74 abstentions.

A far right talk show has been suspended from public TV due to their episode about immigrants where the show, in its usual manner, depicted these people as nothing but rape loving AIDS spreading savages from the east. This trash was not on state run or pvt. national level TV, it was on local stations and gov't agency took away the broadcast license of the show, and went to fine 6 involved stations with each up to 150.000e (a shitton of money for local TV budget). Three out of them successfully appealed out of the fine because the show went live thus "we didn't know what to do" shit, this show and host have a history and reputation so that's a lie but a legit one for court, the other three actually did a re-run the next day after broadcast and hence they didn't have a law straw to hold on to.

The charges were hate speech and inducing panic among the public. I thought this might be interesting in the spirit of the free speech talks we had around here for the last couple of days.

To leave a more positive thing about Croatia tho and completely unrelated - even when the water is low and all the electricity we imported came from dirty polluting sources, in a worst case scenario the usage of renewable energy in overall consumption is 1/3. This places us in EU top. The recent 2020 green share targeting created by EU, Croatia isn't really participating because the target was hit around Brave New World tour...
