European Politics

Sorry, I reacted kind of sharp. I'll calm down.

Nationalities asides, I'm much more interested in what happens next.

Carpet bombing?
Napalm?

kidding![/spoiling]

edit:
The nationalities could have impact on the consequences. E.g.:
If there were 174 Americans in that plane, I guess the military were already on their way. Or not?

Looks like 0 Americans ... whoever reported that before was wrong

Among the dead: Dutch researcher Joep Lange, a former president of the International AIDS Society, whose death was confirmed Thursday by the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales in Australia.

“Joep had an absolute commitment to HIV treatment and care in Asia and Africa,” professor David Cooper said in a statement. “The joy in collaborating with Joep was that he would always bring a fresh view, a unique take on things, and he never accepted that something was impossible to achieve. Our joint work in Bangkok, the HIV-NAT center [a Netherlands-Australia-Thailand collaboration], will stand as his legacy.”

Why is so much focus put on the victim's nationalities? Does this have an influence on how terrible this is?

Gotta say that was the first thing that came into my head after reading reactions from governments too, "We're trying to find out if any of our country were on the plane!!!".

If Russia is claiming nothing to do with these separatists.. then I guess they shouldn't mind armies going in to clean them up..

Latest figures:
. 192 Netherlands
· 44 Malaysia
· 27 Australia
· 12 Indonensia
· 10 UK
· 4 Belgium
· 4 Germany
· 3 Philippines
· 1 Canada
· 1 New Zealand

Good governmentship! Better than sticking heads in the sand like ostriches. Governments should inform their citizens as well as they can. Not only inform. There's a lot more. They're providing care and more specific information for the next of kins.
And if they got guts (and wit) they'll get to the bottom of this.

It doesn't come across in any way like that though, it comes across as a "Do we take this personally?" affair. Unless Russia are specifically giving objections to it, I'm curious as to why it's continued this long without military sweeping in and locking it down anyway.

Back to 1 American, you would think it would be easy to figure out the nationalities on an international flight given passport requirements. The "good" thing is that this is still being covered heavily here and this should put some heat on the separatists. This is 100% on them.

"Do we take this personally?"
Hell yes.

"We will turn every stone and if it becomes clear that this was an attack I will be personally responsible for guaranteeing that the people responsible will be determined. That's what we owe the innocent victims and their families" - Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

But if there had been no dutch on the flight (from a different location naturally) then there would be no real interest?

From?

edit:
Rutte, I suppose?

Perhaps not in the same way, but well, it's logical that he's in the center of the attention now. If it were another country, someone else would take that role.

Sorry I meant the flight being from a different location, got distracted mid post and missed out a few words >.<

I can understand the dutch concern completely as thats where the flight travelled from, what I was questioning (and possibly Perun, dunno?) was all the other countries going "I think we had a few people onboard, RABBLE!!".

I think the desire to know who was on board (nationalities) is pretty natural and there are some practical effects (like who notifies the families and who sends in people to investigate). But, if there were 300 people from (pick the most obscure country you can think of) on board, this would still be a huge deal, taking down a civilian airliner it going to get huge press, it so rarely happens and violates so may treaties. Add to that the large amount of attention this crisis has gotten since the Olympics

Aside from personal tragedy as any other, this is indeed a big loss in the medical world as well. He was a pioneer in the field since the early days of the AIDS epidemic and had worked ceaselessly to improve access to life-saving drugs in impoverished corners of the globe.

Hopefully these assholes will finish trying to cover this up, looting the plane and bodies so they can at least get a proper burial.

The Russian government's denial that Russia armed the Ukrainian rebels reminds me of the Iraqi minister who repeatedly told the world's media that the Americans were not in Baghdad when American tanks were firing shells mere streets away.

They have tanks Vlad. Where else could they have got them from?

I have no doubt that some Ukrainian military supplies ended up in the hands of the rebels. But the supplies that only Russian forces have hitherto deployed? Yeah.

I am pretty sure any Ukrainian supplies that ended up in their hands came because these people took bases with Russian supplies. This is nothing more than a continuation of a long standing policy of Russian/Soviet expansionism and occupation.
