Ed Hunter

. I also remember reading something somewhere that the real reason for no uk shows was something to do with the band selling their publishing rights when Bruce and Adrian came back and playing in the uk would have meant a big tax bill.
Yes, that was most likely the reason:

The band is effectively taking out a $30m loan and promises to pay back its creditors through future earnings - a financial tool called 'securitisation'.

I also remember reading somewhere that they payed everything during the duration of the bond, and that the band now receives yearly royalties again on the old catalogue (1980 - 1998 material). They still own the rights to everything too.

Those were the days when the Fan Club put some great things together: trips, FC conventions, etc.

I remember being jealous seeing that from the distance.
They did used to put some great effort into some cool things back then.

I did another fc trip to Paris in 2004 to watch the early days dvd tour. That was another great trip.

Also remember the FC convention the day after Metal 2000 at Earl’s Court. Think that was the last convention the band ever did and I was lucky enough to get my first edition of the run to the hills book signed by the whole band.

You jammy bastards!

I also want to add a thought to Ed Hunter: It wasn't the first video game release by a band. Before it there was Queen's The eYe. Like Ed Hunter, it was a truly awful game that had a long development phase and was seriously dated when it was eventually released.

Usually the release date is given as 1998, but according to Wikipedia, a German magazine had a review of it in December 1997. I also remember it was a Christmas gift in my family, and that would only make sense in 1997. I don't know when development began, but maybe it's possible to determine if it was before Melt, and thus may have been the inspiration for Maiden to have their own game.

Anyway, the only reason even die-hard Queen fans remember that game was because it had remixes of Queen songs for the in-game soundtrack, some of which were also available as CD audio tracks. It is a very, very distant memory in my own head, and before looking it up for this post I wasn't even sure if it was something my brain made up. But it exists. https://www.boostwin1.top/ru/
I remember The eYe as well - the game itself was forgettable, but the soundtrack remixes were actually the only reason anyone talked about it. Funny how both Queen and Maiden ended up with games that aged terribly but left some weirdly memorable musical leftovers.

The fan club was really excellent then. Always seemed to be a great trip being organised and the merch just for signing on was super high quality. I only sign up now for pre sales now as it's mostly pointless.

That Earls Court meet and greet feels like a fever dream, can't imagine them doing something like that now.

But yeah, Ed Hunter was dreadful.

From Metal Archives (https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Iron_Maiden/Ed_Hunter/12852):

This is a three-disc video game and greatest hits package. Disc 2 contains the installation files for the video game, while Disc 3 includes the game itself. The tracks are sequenced according to the number of votes they received in a fan poll held on the Iron Maiden website in December 1998, in which fans voted for the top 20 Iron Maiden songs of all time. Disc 1 also includes a hidden track: a newly recorded version of “Wrathchild” featuring Bruce Dickinson on vocals.

I remember Bruce and Nicko saying its a "brilliant game" back in the day.

Yeah theres little or no effort in the fanclub these days. Its not worth joining

I wonder if you can get the soundtrack from the game? There's a couple of tracks on YouTube but not the full thing. I kind of dig the blippy renditions (which totally sound dated for 1998).

Strange! I only had real Maiden music playing in the background (one song on repeat per level). Are you sure it is really from Ed Hunter?

My curiosity got the better of me and I decided to install and try Ed Hunter, the game launches to the main menu but on trying to start a game it immediately crashes, I don't suppose anyone else has managed to run the game on modern hardware? I have tried compatibility mode too but when trying this, the game doesn't even launch at all.

You would have to use a windows emulator to get it to work properly. There is a bunch of them out there. Here's a decent tutorial.

If it's any help, I thought the same as you a couple of years ago and did manage to get it working eventually. It wasn't worth the hassle... It wasn't even fun from a nostalgia point of view.

I remember desperately wanting to like it when it came out but it was just a chore to play.
