Re: Thoughts on Dream Theater?

In some ways. They're heavily influenced by Maiden (and many others). Dream Theater has covered the entire Number Of The Beast album live (several times) and released the "official bootleg" to fans.

Dream Theater's music is generally more complicated and technical, but it also sometimes has more sonic variety. They get both heavier and lighter than Maiden at times.

Among the DT fans I've talked to about it, the suspicion is that DT will feature more of their heavier material on the upcoming tour. They're known for long epics, but it's unlikely they'll play any of those.

Their main influences I'd say are Yes, Pink Floyd and Kansas, but them being metal you can see the Metallica/Maiden influence as well.

SMX's comment about their "long epics" is an uderstatement, they love clocking over 9 minutes, well lately, in earlier albums one or two tracks, but in recent albums a song under 6 is a surprise.

Actually, their last few albums have had more metal influence, and less traditional prog.

And while I won't spoil the setlist here, I can say: it's definitely the metal side of DT.

Agreed, and I love heavy DT. A lot of people gave SC shit, but it is my favorite after SfaM. It pushed Awake, back a spot... that's saying a lot, because Awake is a brilliant effort.

Their last few records, song lengths listed from short to long (not in album order)...

Black Clouds & Silver Linings, 2009 - 6 songs, 70 minutes ... 5:26, 8:36, 12:50, 13:09, 16:11, 19:16

Systematic Chaos, 2007 - 8 songs, 73 minutes ... 5:36, 6:01, 6:55, 8:54, 9:00, 10:44, 14:57, 16:39
Note: two of those tracks are parts 1 and 2 of a single 25:39 song.

Octavarium, 2005 - 8 songs, 72 minutes ... 4:30, 5:19, 6:47, 7:36, 8:13, 8:40, 10:43, 23:59

That gives you a good idea how long their songs are ... and why it's hard for them to put together a good set with only 50 minutes to play.

It took me a while to get into Systematic Chaos. Didn't like it much at first, but I now like it quite a bit.

For people who don't know DT, but like metal, this is the album to start with ... and after that, Train Of Thought.

DT's opening song on this tour, "As I Am", is the opening song on Train Of Thought. DT is also playing "Constant Motion" from Systematic Chaos.

Oh wow, I was right haha, I was just going off a hunch.

As much of a fan I am of Maiden, I'm a bigger fan of Dream Theater. They are amazing!  :)

If you haven't checked out their albums, I'd highly recommend these:

Images And Words
Awake
Scenes From A Memory
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Train Of Thought
Systematic Chaos
Black Clouds & Silver Linings

I'm a huge prog rock fan (in fact, my nickname among my friends is 'Prog', because they know I love it so much.) The main reason why I love maiden is because I consider them one of the first progressive symphonic heavy metal bands (an opinion that is controversial, but is mine all the same.) At least, they have progressive elements in their music.

Iron Maiden and Dream Theater are both music for 'thinking people', as is Rush, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Tool, and [insert other prog rock band here.] It was so exciting seeing them both playing on the same bill!

You should read the thread from the start. You'll find interesting discussions on the different albums. Also I believe we had a "Dream Theater Week" not sure, but worth looking up.

I HAVE to know why you consider Maiden "symphonic." They have no opera choirs, ochestrations or mash-up of classical pieces in their music, not even their epics. What do you consider "symphonic?"

I consider Maiden Symphonic because of the way the melodies are laid out.

Or perhaps I should have said "The first progressive melodic heavy metal band." Actually, that sounds more realistic to what they are.

So Mike Portnoy graced Avenged Sevenfold with his presence in their new album and i have to say it is really good. Was listening to it with a friend of mine last night. Slash's new one is really good too.

I wonder how long that will be for... Considering his commitments with DT I doubt he'll be a permanent member for A7x

Huge DT fan here. I love them even more than Maiden (GASP!). I wish they'd have supported Maiden when they come to Australia next year. It would give me the chance to see my two all time favourite bands live in the one show. Lucky Americans.  -_-

I hope the tour introduced a lot of Maiden fans to DT. One of their main influences was Maiden, along with Rush & Yes, so it's a good mix.
