Also here is another "nugget" in Breaking All Illusions. The first verse modulates between 7/4 and 6/4. Just like the first verse in Learning to Live. And I think the intro is in 15/8, just like in Learning to Live.

I'm thinking these are all intentional. Nevertheless, it's a great album.

The start of the Metropolis instrumental is 7+6. The first couple verses of A Change Of Seasons are in 15. These time sigs are actually common for DT and probably aren't intentional references at all.

I got the CD yesterday at about lunchtime. I didn't get round to listening to it until after 5pm because I'd been listening to the football on the radio. It's pretty good and I expect it will grow on me. The lack of cookie-monster vocals and rapping is a relief and James' voice sounds better than usual on some of the songs. The highlights for me are 'Bridges on the Sky' and 'Breaking all Illusions', and of course 'On the Backs of Angels' which I didn't like at first but now I love. The one thing I don't like about 'A Dramatic Turn of Events' is that there's still too many heavy riffs. I love a good riff as much as the next man but Dream Theater don't need them. Many of their best songs aren't remotely heavy, such as 'Surrounded', so they probably could have done without the heavy riffs. Overall it's a good album which I expect to enjoy a lot more over the coming days.

Have you heard the song? It's just like Learning to Live. Bass and drums only for 2 measures before the singing begins are in both songs.

Mike Portnoy has already commented on the similarities between 'A Dramatic Turn of Events' and 'Images and Words'.

Well done, Thiago.... Great post and spot-on! I *immediately* noticed everything you wrote about upon my first listen... and found it all incredibly strange... If they are indeed intentional 'nuggets,' then I guess that's a pretty cool idea... However, if they were desperate attempts of secretly re-writing the past... hmm, maybe not so much... I guess only they  will know the real reason for it...

That track-by-track review will be coming any day now.

I listened to the songs that are mentioned in the article (too see whether it is true or not) Thiago Campos doesn't say that the songs are the same. It's just the similary of structure basis. Like how Metallica done that kind of job on their 80's ballads, Fade to Black, Sanitarium and One. So, I don't think those are "desperate attempts of secretly re-writing the past", the theory Portnoy talked about. Can't wait to hear the whole album, by the way, I'm on my way to complete my "Listening to whole DT discography" project, when the albums that are released so far are done, I'll start listening to A Dramatic Turn of Events. I'm currently starting to Train of Thought and I think I'll be ready on the date of release, September 13th.

Just finished listening to A Dramatic Turn of Events and I want to dedicate my 500th post to this album

The album became the fifth Dream Theater release to get 4 stars out of 5 from me. Only 5 star album is Images and Words, by the way. Talking about the song qualities, the album's first overall rating by it's songs in my book is pretty close to Black Clouds & Silver Linings and Train of Thought. It's a little bit a lower than Black Clouds & Silver Linings, but as an album, I like ADTOE better. Because it feels more special, feels more like an album rather than a catalogue of songs. I consider this album to going back to their roots, because it feels just like Images and Words, but with a worse song quality. Breaking All Illusions is my favorite off this album, Beneath the Surface is my least favorite.

It was just a first impression, though. Things can change with every single listening to that album.

So far it has 5 stars from me. These would be my ratings for every album by the way. Not When Day And Dream Unite though.

Images and Words: 5
Awake: 4
Falling into Infinity: 3
Scenes: 5
Six Degrees: 4(Might go up to 5)
Train of Thought: 3
Octavarium: 4
Systematic Chaos: 1
Black Clouds: 4

Just got home with it. Ripped it and now playing Angels. I've set it for repeat; I'm not done for the night until I've heard it 6 times.

(By comparison, day 1 of TFF was 8 plays and day 1 of Black Clouds was 4 or 5 plays.)

Heading for the chatroom to discuss the awesome.

Listened to Build Me Up, Break me Down.

Ordered the album.

Listening to the album on Spotify in the meantime. This is turning out quite nicely. Probably not going to beat Black Clouds though, which I think is a brilliant, brilliant album.

It definitely beat Black Clouds for me. The last 2 songs are the only ones that held up in my opinion. It's still a great album though.

It's cool but after Beautiful Agony it takes a huge nose dive.

Oops. Edited.

MIKE PORTNOY Reportedly Sued DREAM THEATER For 'Wrongfully Excluding' Him From Band

According to Courthouse News Service, ex-DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy filed a lawsuit against his former bandmates in April claiming that they "wrongfully excluded" him from the group and are "wrongfully using the name of the band in connection with [their] recording of an album without the participation or consent of [Portnoy]." In addition, the drummer's complaint, which was filed on April 27, alleges that the defendants — John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Jordan Rudess (keyboards), James LaBrie (vocals), along with associated companies Ytse Jam, Inc. and Infinity Tours, Inc. — "are wrongfully using the name of the band in connection with the promotion of live performances by the individual defendants, without the participation or consent of [Portnoy]."

In an August 2011 interview with the Greek edition of Rock Hard magazine, Portnoy stated about his departure from DREAM THEATER, "I didn't make the decision to leave DREAM THEATER before [hooking up with] AVENGED SEVENFOLD [as their touring drummer], but I knew that something had to change in the DREAM THEATER camp. It's unfortunate that it was me that had to change, because I never wanted to leave the band — it was never my intention; I never wanted the split. I just merely thought that the band really could use a break, because I think the romance was really dying — backstage and between [the members] personally. 25 years without a break is a very, very, very long time and sometimes these relationships need a break from each other to rekindle the flame. So that's all I suggested. And even before I [went on the road] with AVENGED SEVENFOLD, I remember touring with [the progressive rock project] TRANSATLANTIC at the beginning of 2010 and already knowing that something was wrong in the DREAM THEATER world and that I really needed a break from the guys and the whole DREAM THEATER machine. I knew something was brewing and I knew that I was unhappy, and as has been well documented elsewhere, I merely just wanted a break. But unfortunately, those guys [the rest of DREAM THEATER] didn't see it that way and didn't respect my request for time off. It's unfortunate [that it turned out that way]."

It's obvious he wanted to stop Dream Theater. I'm surprised he didn't pull a Roger Waters and sue them. In fact, this DT thing is so similar to the Pink Floyd situation it's scary. I guess he drew more than a musical influence.
I stand corrected.  :S

Of course he's a GREAT MUSICIAN. He was in Dream Theater.  ;)

Just checking, so that you get the joke (as this started well before your time). A certain word is censored so it is replaced with GREAT MUSICIAN (a reference to a long gone trolling member).

So basically he said that Portnoy's an ass.  :D

In case you DID get the joke: Move along!
