Myung speaks! They're really desperate to get people to shows if they pulled out the big guns.

Also, Faythe is in Myung's room! Myung is Gabriel confirmed!

They booked multiple shows in multiple small states on the east coast for an album that most fans have already seen live and has a lukewarm reception at best. I still don't understand how their management allowed this.

Is it because they're booking larger theaters and opera houses and what not to perform in?
It's a couple reasons. Doesn't have much to do with the venues, their PR on that has been a bit misleading. They've always played those sorts of venues, even when Portnoy was in the band. It has more to do with overbooking. They didn't really need to hit every state on the east coast, or do three shows in Florida. They also slowly announced tour dates, so fans in one part of FL already bought tickets for a show further away from them before the show in their area was announced, for example. Plus The Astonishing just wasn't a very well received album. If they did an encore of non-Astonishing songs it might be going better, but the general consensus among fans seems to be "been there done that".

They're also playing a ton of regions that they haven't visited in years. I feel bad for the fans in those areas because the low ticket sales are probably going to stop them from ever going down there again.

That's the main problem. They did an entire tour of The Astonishing which was pretty comprehensive, even if it didn't make it anywhere to the south. If they had just done a 7-8 date tour that took into account the major markets from Arizona/Nevada across to Florida it would have made a lot more sense. Instead, they're booking smaller towns all along the east coast and midwest, even though those markets had pretty major stops on the last tour. They're trying to be good to their fans and hit as many markets as possible, they just chose the exact wrong career moment to do it.

The cynical side of me says they're doing this knowing it won't do well so they can have an excuse not to hit those markets next time. I'm thinking that's management side, not necessarily JP and the rest of the band.

Hmm. That's a little too cynical, I think. No manager purposefully wants the band to fail on a tour, they lose money.

I guess that is why bands like Maiden don't do it either and just hit the big cities. It's not very profitable in today's musical climate I guess?

Certainly not for a band of Dream Theater's size touring on an album that wasn't particularly beloved by the fanbase. It'd be like Maiden at their 90's popularity touring the AMOLAD show w/ no classics in the encore.

Yea, fair enough.

Yea it just makes more sense that way in general. Iron Maiden's last US tour was only 10 dates but they were smart about spreading it out. Most people who wanted to see them wouldn't have to travel far. DT is basically doing the opposite this tour by putting a ton of dates in one region. They should've hit all those markets in the first leg.

And yes it's just The Astonishing and nothing else, despite the album only being a little over 2 hours. They could do a whole hour of other stuff.

No, I think it's good they did a wide scale tour for the new album. The first leg was great. It just seems redundant at this point.
