VAN HALEN Book Author: The Original Four-Man Band Is What The World Wants - Sep. 3, 2007
Bring Back Glam! recently spoke with rock writer Ian Christe about his new book "Everybody Wants Some: The Van Halen Saga". During the interview, Christe explains his love for VAN HALEN, his opinion of the upcoming reunion tour and future book projects. An excerpt follows:
Bring Back Glam!: What sparked your interest in telling the history of VAN HALEN?
Ian Christe: That's easy — VAN HALEN is just plain interesting. Not a lot of rock bands span so many decades, cover so much geography, and reinvent the wheel so many times. I liked the challenge of turning that excitement into something portable and readable. The inspiration probably goes back about six years. When I was interviewing the great death metal guitarist Trey Azagthoth of MORBID ANGEL for my last book, "Sound of the Beast", he raved about Eddie Van Halen for hours. Plus it's a thrill to unleash a biography of a band that, in its heyday, never got the book it deserved because its fans were probably considered illiterate boobs.
Bring Back Glam!: Were the ladies of VAN HALEN (wives, ex-wives, mothers) especially helpful in your research?
Ian: You mean why did I dedicate the book to our mothers? Valerie Bertinelli was a last-minute addition, by virtue of being Wolfgang's mom. Come on, these are the first women in VAN HALEN's lives, the ones who unleashed all this heathen male aggression on the world!
Bring Back Glam!: How long did it take for you to complete the project?
Ian: I spent about a year gathering newspapers, DVDs, live bootlegs, videotapes, interviews of all types, court records, and contacts with people who knew how everything went down. Then I sat down and wrote everything down from start to finish several times until it made my captive audience of close personal mental cases laugh aloud all the way through. I could have finished sooner, but by the end I was playing guitar at least four hours a day and drinking too much.
Bring Back Glam!: Did you try to make contact with the VAN HALEN brothers? Did they give you the brush-off, or were they supportive?
Ian: Good question. I did not ultimately interview Eddie or Alex, but I didn't start the book until I had about 1,000 interviews on hand ranging from 1976 to 2006. Navigating the politics and handlers of the dysfunctional VAN HALEN machine did not turn out to be a productive way to spend time. I mean, I wanted Eddie, Alex, Michael, Dave, Sammy, and Gary all or nothing. And while I was working they were in no shape to give a clear picture of recent events, let along the distant past. I hope they're supportive of "Everybody Wants Some" — I think they'll be more surprised than anyone, reading the story of their own band thus far.
Bring Back Glam!: What is your opinion of the upcoming "reunion" tour?
Ian: Well, this is giving away the last part of the book, but I think the original four-man VAN HALEN is what the world wants. It would be great if Wolfie were part of that, or part of a future VAN HALEN, but everybody wants a little piece of 1977 first. And Wolfgang could learn a lot from watching the team in action. RollingStone.com recently conducted an interview with former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Michael: "It really didn't end in total peace and harmony within the band, for whatever reasons. I'm not going to finger-point at anyone, but the tour, after eighty shows, just couldn't go on at that point."
RollingStone.com: How did you find out they were going to do this upcoming tour without you?
Michael: "Probably like everybody else, I found out on the Internet and through word of mouth. I can understand that he wants his kid to play with him. If I had a kid like that, I'd like to have him perform with me, too. It was kind of funny when I first heard about it being a VAN HALEN 'reunion.'"
RollingStone.com: So they never called you?
Michael: "No, nobody ever contacted me about anything. I just kind of found out with everyone else."
RollingStone.com: Is it true they tried to keep you off the 2004 tour?
Michael: "Yeah. Ed didn't really want me on that tour."
RollingStone.com: Do you know why?
Michael: "He was always put off that I was going out and playing with Sammy [Hagar] when we weren't doing anything. It wasn't like I was doing it to spite anybody. I was just tired of sitting at home and doing nothing. Sammy asked me one day if I would like to come out and maybe make an appearance at one or two of [his] shows and have some fun, and I said, 'Yeah, great.' It kind of snowballed into me coming out and doing a few songs with him here and there."

Many of you have seen Pete Frame's "Rock Family Trees". I occasionally work on similar family trees of my own. I have a Van Halen tree "in progress", and I thought I'd share it here.
I have completed research on the missing parts of the tree, but I haven't got it in the file yet. I'm going to work on that now. Watch this post for an edit later with a bigger and better tree...
Note #1: this tree uses extended (Unicode) characters for the lines. I've checked it out with both IE and Firefox, and it displays correctly on my computer ... if you're seeing a bunch of strange symbols instead of lines, PM me for the original text file to see it correctly.
Note #2: While I'm usually a Firefox devotee, this tree is easier to read with IE (the IE rendition of the font is clearer). You might want to try that.

I'd have to disagree with you, Maiden's family tree is longer and WAY MORE complicated! Look at that booklet for Best Of the Beast. Try and follow that!

Former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony has told Billboard.com that he's not going out of his way to keep tabs on the group's tour but that "people tell me things, and I heard the tour's been fine." He admits he was "bummed out for a little bit" after being booted from the band — and especially after he was temporarily replaced from album cover images on the group's web site — but that he's largely over it.
"I'm totally fine with it now 'cause it is what it is," Anthony explains. "There's no use dwelling on it or whining about it. The fans know the band. They know what we've done, and I'm really proud of the history of the band. But I'm focusing on having fun and doing what Sam [Sammy Hagar] and I are out doing right now. As long as I keep that perspective on it, that's good."
