I dunno, Michael Anthony was one of the founding members of the band...Eddie's son has a lot of work to do to replace him, IMO...

It's old news. So old that I don't even remember how old. ;)

The main topic of that newsitem is that a tour will be announced. Fans have waited for ages, so they must be excited.

Damn, Forostar beat me to it. I was about to submit basically the same answer.

Way old news. At least six months old.

Edit: to clarify, what's old is that the reunion is happening. The only new thing here is that they're finally going to announce some concerts.

And as for Michael Anthony not being there: his bass playing won't be missed. I'm not insulting Anthony's bass playing, which is solid though not spectacular. I mean that Wolfgang will surely be playing the bass parts note for note, like any capable sideman could. What will be missed is Anthony's background vocals, which are a huge part of the VH sound.

VH was better with Hagar anyway. All DLR offers is screams and a wild-man act he halfway stole from Ted Nugent. Sammy Hagar can sing well and write good songs. I'd rather see the Waboritas with Sammy and Michael Anthony any day.

Another edit: Forostar keeps stealing my thunder! Dammit! *shakes fist in mock anger*

I agree w/you SMX that VH was better with Sammy. They had more success with him, starting with 5150. But I did forget about Michael's singing. Will Wolfgang be able to hit those notes? I have their show Live Without A Net from 1986, first tour w/Sammy and Sammy was a breath of fresh air with the band.

When DLR reunited with them in 1996, they relaesed their Greatest Hits Vol 1 and I remember liking the new tracks Can't Get This stuff No More and Me Wise Magic. Curious if they'll pull those out of the woodwork with this "tour" coming up? But the way Sammy left, it was all over MTV!- back when MTV had good stuff on. Seems like sammy was kicked out by Eddie, cuz there was this huge argument and what not.

How exactly did Mike leave? Did Eddie say "Seeya!" or did Sammy want him to join the Waboritas?

*ducks away and laughs*

About the replacing of Mr. Anthony. I think it's quite rude that no explanation has been given (and if so, then I must have missed it). The dude was always very loyal in good and bad times. In other words, I am sorry for him.

I guess it doesn't affect me, cuz out of all you that posted in this thread, I'm the "newbie"...you all have thousands of posts!

No matter. I thought it was a good topic to post, and yeah, there was news about a possible reunion w/DLR back in like...June or so...

About six months ago, when the reunion news first came out, I started doing research on the history of Van Halen, with the intention of putting together a Pete-Frame-style Van Halen Family Tree. In the course of my research, I learned that Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony have been doing quite a lot together over the past five years or so. Planned side projects that never came together, Mike playing live with the Waboritas, etc. During most of this time, Mike was still officially a member of Van Halen.

Another piece of the puzzle: Eddie Van Halen is, and always has been, an asshole. There have been times when they've been adept at masking it, but it's true. Every story I've read about VH infighting always comes back to Eddie being an ass. Alex always took his brother's side, and that left Mike as the peacekeeper, preventing fights between Eddie and the singer.

So the impression that I've gotten - and keep in mind I have no facts to back this up, it's just a suspicion - is that Mike finally got tired of putting up with Eddie's bullshit. He was having a good time with Sammy while Eddie kept Van Halen inactive. So why give up a good thing with Sammy to reunite with an asshole guitarist?

I heard this the other day and even though it had been speculated, I still find this wacky!  I love Van Halen but I am not even excited about this new tour.  I mean....Wolfgang on bass?  DLR all of a sudden back?  I am wondering if this really is even going to happen?  And if so, how long will it last?  Not completely sold here!  Food for thought....imagine Steve Harris getting one of his daughters to replace Bruce.  Come on, That would be wacko!
What is Eddie thinking?  I know he had oral cancer and an alcohol problem.  The divorce from Valerie was inevitable.  We all have are issues.  However the picking is poor here.

Did VAN HALEN Remove MICHAEL ANTHONY From Album Art On Their Web Site? - Aug. 15, 2007

RollingStone.com reports: Over the past twenty-four hours, VAN HALEN fans have been mulling over the latest development in the band’s reunion saga: A poster on a music-industry message board pointed out that in the wake of the band's tour announcement, the Van Halens seemed to have airbrushed original bassist Michael Anthony out of older album covers on their official Web site and replaced him with their newest member: Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang. The swap was evident on the lower right of the cover of the band's self-titled debut (which came out thirteen years before Wolfgang was born), and the group shot for "Women and Children First" had been removed entirely.

Good post, Forostar. Nice info.

In the mid-80s, Frank Zappa was remastering some of his early albums, and he decided he no longer liked the drums and bass. So he wiped them and had them redone by his then-current band members. Most Zappa fans were outraged, as the records had a more "organic" feel with the original tracks. There were also a lot of fans of the original Mothers Of Invention band who were outraged at this insult to the original players.

I bring this up because I suddenly fear that Eddie might want to do that to Michael. I mean, taking him off the album covers is really only a step away. (Yes, I read the article, I know the original covers are back on the site now.) But if Eddie wants to rewrite history, then I wouldn't be surprised if all future VH reissues have Wolfgang on bass.

Or worse yet, Wolfgang on backing vocals. As I mentioned above, Michael's vocals are crucial to the classic VH sound.

Wasn't it also done with the old Ozzy Osbourne albums?

Gamma Ray did something like this with their best of album "Blast From The Past", however it was less insulting. All the old songs were re-recorded by the new line-up, just to get a brand-new vibe to it all, containing Kai Hansen on vocals.

Van Halen reissuing all their albums cuz Michael is out? Wow...must have been a nasty split between them, although Eddie is the control freak in the band, right? Is that why Dave left in the first place back in 1985, or is it cuz he wanted to pursue his solo career? Eat 'Em and Smile was a great little album, with Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan...

I doubt I'll see the upcoming tour...not unless the shows get RAVE reviews or something...tix are between $50-$150 from what I've read

Van Halen is just one of my favorites band too...

I was happy when they announce their reunion...but they want a price soooooo high that some countries can't organise a gig for them. Like in France...

We have Genesis coming back in Parc des Princes, The Police in Stadium of France but why can't we have Van Halen in Stadium of France ? Tour-operators should dare it !

Sure, it would be "sold-out" very quickly ! Money can't be the only one reason ! One day, french tour-manager will have to takes more risks with bands we don't use to see !

Hope ! Just hope...

One day, Van Halen In France ?... :innocent:

Here's some more news on the split with Anthony:

The Pulse Of Radio has issued the following report from Don Kaye:

"Van Halen may have restored former bassist Michael Anthony's photos to the album cover art on the band's official web site, but it seems the group is still trying to remove Anthony from its history.

According to AntiMusic.com, Anthony's name has been taken off the writing credits for some of the group's music. An email to the site from a Van Halen fan explained, "On every single Van Halen song (with exception to the three new songs on the Best Of Both Worlds compilation), credits have always gone to Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and the lead singer who is featured on the song... However, during the credits of the film Superbad, which features the song 'Panama', the song is only credited to the two Van Halens and (David Lee) Roth! Anthony continues to get snubbed by his former band as they attempt to erase him from the history of the band."

AntiMusic checked the ASCAP database and learned that Anthony's name has been removed from the songwriting credits of the album 1984, on which 'Panama' originally appeared, although apparently he still gets credit on other Van Halen releases..."

Wow. That's mega-serious shit. Songwriting credits determine who gets royalties. In other words, removing the credit = denying Anthony payment for the use of those songs in movies like Superbad, or the tiny payment he's supposed to get when a radio station plays VH. (Each play might be tiny, but they add up.)

If Van Halen really did that, it'll never stand up in court. Expect Michael Anthony to sue if this is true. You just don't fuck with another man's livelihood like that.
