Diesel 11's Maiden Rankings

A sea of it?
:ok:

#169: Space Station #5

N/A 11/32
This song is... eh. The highlight is definitely Brucie's Race of the Cocksuckers. Not one of Maiden's best moments, but what the hell, it's nice to know these guys like the same kind of humor we do, right? Right?

#168: Nodding Donkey Blues
N/A 12/32
The song itself is meh, but I love the lyrics to this one. Highly enjoyable and it can usually get a laugh out of me. Not much else to say... cool jam, but not the greatest ever.

It might just be from the fact that I've got so much Maiden in my head right now but... I don't... get this... :S

#185: More Tea Vicar

N/A 2/32
This is from a jam session I believe, and it really shows because the song sucks. Meh. Really could have left it off. Bruce's constant joking within it get old from the moment the song starts. They've had better comedic tracks than this.

#184: Purgatory
Killers 1/10
This is the second worst song in Maiden's discography and the worst from any of their albums. It's just... no. The repetition is bad, the lyrics are shit ("all my love's inside of you", "melt through the floor"... what the fuck??), and Di'Anno's vocals are at a low as well. As I said in the commentary thread, "Please take me away, take me away, so far away" describes my thoughts while listening to it. For a Maiden song, Purgatory is shit.

Well my expectation from how your post was written was that you'd intended to just link the site where you already wrote it, and then forgot.

Perhaps it would've been better that way, given that I am going to go cry in a corner that anyone thinks Purgatory is close to the worst song on its album, let alone the entire discography...

Actually no, I'm posting this on that site and this one simultaneously actually, that way I can get my thoughts down.

Now now, More Tea Vicar is worse! :D

#167: Hocus Pocus
N/A 13/32
Guitars are in top form, and Nicko is great on the drums, but nonetheless, this won't beat the original version. The yodelling is sorely lacking. Otherwise a nice cover.

#166: Rainbow's Gold
N/A 14/32
So this is the song that apparently Steve stole from to write Hallowed Be Thy Name. And then he covered this one and um, well uh, yeah. Not much to say except that Hallowed is better.

#165: Quest for Fire
Piece of Mind 1/9
Time for a classic era Maiden tune to appear. I doubt anyone's surprised by this one being low, but that said, I'm at the point now where I enjoy the songs on the list. Quest for Fire does a great job of visualizing that which Bruce is singing of, and it's a pretty enjoyable track. Just falls flat in comparison to the band's other material.

#164: I've Got The Fire
N/A 15/32
Another fire song, also from the POM sessions. This is a pretty cool B-side, took me a bit to get into but I can really enjoy it now. They're firing at all cylinders with this one. Still not one of the greatest, but it's cool certainly.

#163: The Pilgrim
A Matter of Life and Death 1/10
First time I heard this song I had never actually heard of it, and it was interesting to hear, but I wasn't exactly thrilled. I definitely like it now, but it's still the weakest link of AMOLAD.

#162: Montsegur
Dance of Death 1/11
Montsegur seems to be considered an underrated gem of Maiden's discography that few know about. It's certainly one of their heavier pieces, but the guitar just isn't right for what they're trying to accomplish. If they could fix that, maybe make it more like an actual thrash tune, it would work better. As it is, it's good but not great, certainly the weakest of DOD.

A bugger of a track, I agree.

#161: Isle of Avalon
The Final Frontier 1/10
Yeah, this one might be controversial. As if this list wasn't already. I love the build-up with this one, but there's no payoff. Once it goes into metal mode this song becomes rather uninteresting. Sigh. The worst off of TFF? I'm afraid so.

#160: Roll Over Vic Vella
N/A 16/32
Half of the non-album tracks are already on the list, wow. Anyways, this song is a great example of how to make a cover - take an existing song and tweak it here and there. Roll Over Beethoven becomes Roll Over Vic Vella here, the soundbits complement, not detract, from the song. If I've got one criticism, it's that Bruce sounds shot by the end, but other than that, great cover.

#159: Charlotte The Harlot
Iron Maiden 3/9
I know Paul gets criticized for the way he performs these days, but god, I can hardly understand him even with the studio version. It mars an otherwise decent song, and yeah, the other Charlotte songs are better.

#158: Bayswater Ain't A Bad Place To Be
N/A 17/32
This spoken word number is pure genius and Bruce should be proud of himself. I have no more to say, excellent work lads.

157: Women In Uniform
N/A 18/32
Other than BYDTTS, this is the only cover used as a single in the band's history. It's certainly a decent one. Not their best, mind you, but cool early Maiden.

#156: All In Your Mind
N/A 19/32
BYDTTS's B-sides are nothing to write home about, but Holy Smoke's are actually quite nice. All In Your Mind is a cool song, and I believe I've even seen a list of Maiden b-sides were it took the top spot. Not on this list of course, but I do like it. Nicko is a god.

#155: The Educated Fool
Virtual XI 1/8
Besides My Generation, this is the first Blaze track on the list. The Educated Fool was at one time my flat-out least favorite Maiden song, mainly for that "time WEEEEELL floooowww" part. That's changed. I do like it now, but it's still the weakest off the album.

#154: When Two Worlds Collide
Virtual XI 2/8
I'm actually not sure if I prefer this to The Educated Fool, but I'll stick with this for now. Blaze was attempting to write a song with a double meaning, but he didn't exactly succeed with that. Still, it's a cool song, though repetitive. Solo is nice by the way.

#153: Twilight Zone
Killers 5/10
Wow, half of Killers is already on here. Not surprising. This song is a half and half deal. The verses suck. Paul sounds like he's just throwing together words and doing it far too fast. However, I love the chorus. It makes the song. If only the rest of it were that good. Also, how did this become a single? Quite an odd choice.

#152: I Live My Way
N/A 20/32
Man on the Edge has three great B-sides, but this is definitely the weakest. That said, it sums up the Blaze era quite well - they did what they wanted and, in my mind, it payed off. Cool song, would have worked well live.

#151: Doctor Doctor
N/A 21/32
This is considered by a lot of people to be one of Maiden's best b-sides. It's easy to see why. It's not better than the original and it doesn't really do anything different, but it's a cool little ditty and a hail to Maiden's inspirations.

#150: Innocent Exile
Killers 6/10
Again with the repetition! EUGH!!! At least it's not as bad as Another Life. I haven't been very positive about Killers thus far, so here's a positive: it's got some of Steve's best basswork. The opening to this is killer, the rest of the song... eh, not so much. The instrumental ending is kinda cool though.

#149: The Man of Sorrows
The Book of Souls 1/11
With this one in, we have just one more reunion album left to enter the countdown. Surprisingly, it's BNW. Huh. Well anyways, I do like this song, every time I hear it I enjoy it, but I just don't return to it that often. Plus it's between Tears of a Clown, another emotionally touching song, and Empire of the Clouds, which... well, we'll get to that later. TMOS is good, but not my favorite song ever.

#148: Kill Me Ce Soir
N/A 22/32
Oh god, we have only ten non-album songs left. Wow. Anyways, this is a cool B-side, and I'm not surprised a lot of people seem to love it. Bruce's rasp comes in handy here, given it's an angrier song.

#147: New Frontier
Dance of Death 2/11
I'm kinda surprised this is so low, because I do like it. Maybe the lyrics aren't the greatest, it's still a good song. Not to mention, it's Nicko's first, and a pretty good first at that. Chorus is pretty cool.

#146: These Colours Don't Run
A Matter of Life and Death 2/11
It took me a little time to get into this one, and it's still not the highest song on the list (lol), but I do like the song's message; the verses and the chorus are great. The instrumental stuff... is okay but not the best though.

#145: The Longest Day
A Matter of Life and Death 3/11
Another song that required a few listens for me, I can understand those who really like this one, it's got the nature of a monster. I myself like it, but what can I say, Maiden have 144 better songs. :P

#144: Starblind
The Final Frontier 2/10
Guys. Seriously. Great lyrics alone don't make a song. They need music to channel them in the best way possible, and Starblind doesn't have that. It's decent enough, but the Infinite Dreams ripoff and pretty much the whole thing make it feel like it's stitched together. Not that it's bad, just kinda underwhelming.
