Some of these songs are just not good enough compared to the rest. Do you really honestly cross-my-heart believe Virus is better than The Prophecy?
Yes.
Or Rainmaker better than Thin Line?
Yes.
Judas Be My Guide is one of the last solid catchy uptempo songs Maiden did. Not outstanding, but also not lacking anything.
Lightning Strikes Twice is the highlight of
Virtual XI. This song has one of Blaze's best performances. The way he sings that intro, and especially how he does
...It takes me back to my childhood again .. is mindblowing.
Live he couldn't do the chorus, but he nails it pretty well here. Really cool how you can hear with how much spirit Blaze sings those fast couplets -> especially these ends of the sentences. E.g.:
.. in the park
... ...
.. flash lights dark
Naturally, the music helps too. We're used to fine intros when Dave co-writes songs and this is no exception. What a strong melody that lead guitar is. I have read some bad reviews when it comes to this album's sound but when I hear this song, I must protest: the guitar sound is very warm and also fat. Very rich and roaring at the same time as well. It sure helps making this song pretty heavy. On top of that we get its excellent melodic side, and that's why this is one of the finer gems of the Blaze period.
Virus is top-3 Dave Murray co-written material. It is Maiden's stand alone song with its own independent message in the whole discography. I do not mind it's not on a regular studio album (and it wouldn't make sense either). It makes this gem (and
Best of the Beast!) even more special.
The lyrics of our beloved band hardly got so emotional and angry. I love the instrumental parts with the keyboards, later on. Blaze is really convincing and I especially love his lines "The rats in the cellar, you know who you are" (particularly the last line where he changes the tone in
are).
This track has a long and slow intro but the melodies in the rest of the song are way more enthralling than most other Maiden songs with a comparable construction.
Compared to these three songs,
The Prophecy is a bit of a bleak effort. It has some fine melodies, but the song's beauty is more of an artificial nature. It is more of an act (a play in a theatre), and it lacks an amount of
real passion and depth I feel in these nineties songs.
