Dance of Death Cover

at least if only they had just put that Reaper in the center of the cover and the monks behind.... maybe simple, but better don't you think??? [!--emo&;)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/wink.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'wink.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

It's amusing to laugh at how utterly BAD the cover is! [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/lol[1].gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'lol[1].gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Honestly though, I thought when the cover was first showed on the offical site, that it was a joke. I could see the painted background with the monks behind all the CGI crap, so I presumed that someone had hurridly created all this CGI stuff to

a ) Hide the final cover so it would be a surprise on release
b ) Cause the fans to worry for a laugh

Then when I went out to buy it and found the disgusting cover was real, I was horrified!

The only justification I can think of is that this was created by either one of the band themselves or one of their children, so they put it on for that reason. It can't possibly have been a professional! If so, he should be a bin man instead!

Oh well, at least the music rules - don't judge a book [CD] by it's cover!

The last words are an awesome point. [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/headbang.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'headbang.gif\' /][!--endemo--] And, btw, there are rumors that the cover was made by Steve himself - he had some experience with graphics, didn't he? And he didn't put his name in the sleeve because he wanted it to remain a secret. But I donno if that's true - it's just a rumor!

aye, but steves history in graphics was as an architecht.......his drawnings shoud be perfect! hmmmmmmmmm, theres some strange theories on this cover. I think I'd like one of the band to comment on it somewhere....just to settle our minds.

I bet all of you would change your point of view if you found out Steve actually did the artwork.

Personally, I like the cover. The things some of you see as mistakes were most likely intentional. Also, what makes you so sure it's CGI? And who cares if it is. Art is art. Whether it's carved in a cave, painted in a chapel, or computer generated.
What better way to depict Eddie, than as Death himself.

-UP THE IRONS!!!

You know, the cover isn't that bad. When I look at it on my shelf in shadows. And if Steve did make the cover, I'd tell him to his face it looks like commercial shit. He'd do the same to me if I had a band.

Well, it looks like CGI to me, and that is not art, and neither is Picasso in his fucked up period. I still think the cover was based on Stanley Kubrik's Eyes Wide Shut film. If you haven't seen it do so, you'll see what I mean. Wait a minute, you mean Picasso had a period that wasn't f**ked-up??
[span style=\'font-size:8pt;line-height:100%\'](Feel free to ignore me, I know nothing about art.)[/span]

As far as the possibility of Steve having made the cover: if it's true then I'd say to Steve, "I love ya man, but just stick to the bass already!"

Let's be careful not to get in the old 'what is art' debate. Dechamps putting a urinal in a gallery passed as art. A canvas painted blue passes as art. A totally blank canvas with a razor slash in passes as art. Even 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence passes as classical music. It isn't so much the question of whether it is art, the question moreover is why it was made like this.

If they wanted a cover made badly, get a renouned Maiden artist like Melvyn Grant (not Derek, that's out of the question) to draw it properly but with the perspectives out. That would make the cover better, and give it an almost Dalí appearance. If Grant wouldn't have done it they could get a great sci-fi artist/graphic artist like Glenn Fabry or HR Giger. Both of them could do great pictures. Even Jeff Walker from Carcass is a good artist judging by the 'Scum' cover for Napalm Death.

The reason it looks bad is because it looks like it was made in Publisher by putting Clip Art figures over a scanned painting. The cover could be badly made intentionally, but not this bad.

How this actually passed as a cover I'm not sure, but if Steve drew it then he's as bad as Lars in my book.

Ancient Mariner, we can always count on you to settle arguments! [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/headbang.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'headbang.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

[!--QuoteBegin-The Ancient Mariner+Jan 30 2004, 10:38 AM--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE(The Ancient Mariner @ Jan 30 2004, 10:38 AM)[/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--QuoteEBegin--]Even 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence passes as classical music.[/quote]
From this classically-trained musician's perspective: No, it doesn't. It is certainly art, but it is not music, as music requires sound.

Back when I was in the conservatory, I was told that the intention behind 4'33" was for the audience to hear whatever incidental sounds might occur during that time (such as coughing, programs rustling, feet shuffling etc.) and to perceive those sounds as music, as a composition which changes with every "performance". Thus it isn't "4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence" at all, even though it's written that way.

[span style=\'font-size:8pt;line-height:100%\'](In other words, I still don't know anything about visual art, but I did pay attention in music school!)[/span]
