Classic cinema - thoughts and questions

Film nerd post: Below the current state of my wishlist for some "genres". Some of the films are mentioned twice or more, because this has to do with another list I'm making (alphabetical: practical for shopping ;) ). In blue I also marked a few funny Maiden "connections" (or just some word play).  :D

Just curious: Has any of you owned or seen one or more of these films?   :) Which ones?
The Return of the King and Platoon are the most obvious ones, I suppose?

That is a long list, I'll comment on a few for now that stand out.

Hitler: The Last Ten Days was not very good IMO.  I like Alec Guiness, but he was bad in this movie.  The US TV movie The Bunker and the more recent (and much better) Der Untergang were both better films IMO.  It has been a long time  (20 years) since I have seen it, but IIRC some of the "events" in the movie were later disproven or just flat out made up for the movie.

Devil’s Brigade, The -- This was a good 60s action WWII movie, along the lines of the Dirty Dozen.  Not a great movie, but a fun movie.

Rome, Open City  is incredibly interesting just because it was shot on location in 1945, it has a very strong impact,  the feel is very similar to Germany, Year Zero (which is also a very good movie if you have not seen that yet).  I want to see Rossellini's Paisan as well, have not gotten to that one yet.

The only Deliverance I know is far from Sci-Fi. King's extended parts are good (death of Saruman, Mouth of Sauron).

Yeah, my categorizing isn't very clear. I grouped Adventure, Sci-Fi films and Fantasy films together, because my wishlist isn't that big in these genres. So, in most cases, the film is only one of these three genres.
Do you mean Deliverance (1972) with Jon Voight & Burt Reynolds?
The IMDb said Adventure/Drama/Thriller so I added it to this category.

Looking forward to get the King's extended edition sometime!

Alright. Well, I do not mind a few errors, I have seen numerous of Hollywood war films not being the most realistic.
I can imagine other war films are better, but I am pretty curious how an actor like Guiness did Hitler. :)

OK, I guess the film must have come on my list because of the actors I mentioned. And the IMDb grade isn't bad. I have seen enjoyable films with worse indications.

I love location films. Should be impressive indeed! I have only seen one Rossellini film before: Stromboli (1950; also beautifully shot on the real Stromboli island) with Ingrid Bergman, who was portrayed differently than anyone before that film had done. Interesting, also when you realize they had an affair.

wiki:
The film is the result of a famous letter from Ingrid Bergman to Roberto Rossellini, in which she wrote she admired his work, and she wanted to make a movie with him. However, the film is best remembered for the affair between Rossellini and Bergman that occurred during this time, as well as the resultant child out of wedlock. In fact, the affair caused such a scandal in the United States that Bergman was denounced on the floor of the US Senate by Colorado Senator Edwin C. Johnson. Furthermore, her Hollywood career was halted for a number of years, until her Oscar-winning performance in Anastasia.

I will say if you like Rome, Open City, I would rush out to get Germany Year Zero (shot in 1948 in Berlin), takes place right after the war.  Incredibly interesting and amazing to see what the city looked like then versus what it does now.

Let me know how you like Alec as Hitler

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll add that film to the list. I'll let you know about the film but it might take long before I get (and see!) it. (The paradox is that I want to obtain and see much, but I really try not to not collect too quickly and see too much, or else it costs too much money/diskspace/time etc. ) :)

I have seen Platoon and Gettysburg on that rather large list, Foro. Platoon is a masterpiece. That's the only way I can really say it. Go see it.

Gettysburg is not a masterpiece, though it has many fine moments and is, in fact, a favourite of mine. However, it is very slow and ponderous in places, and you have to be fairly familiar with the byplay to really understand it. That doesn't stop Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, and in particular, Tom Berenger from putting in great performances.

Two epics again, I guess. Nice to know what you think of these films. :)

Here my Westerns "wanted" list:
This is non-John Wayne, non-Randolph Scott and non-Harry Carey plus many Joel McCree Westerns are missing as well. These four guys made many Westerns and I'd like to have most of those (I have different overviews for Wayne and Carey and non for the other two).

Pretty spot on, Platoon was an excellent movie, Gettysburg could have been better, but still a worthwhile movie.

I hear you thinking: who the f**k is Gary Merill? Well, in the most films we've seen him in, he played interesting roles, and he is a very good actor, with a dominant screen presence (more than a few times with a bad temper ;) ). E.g., he did "All About Eve" and starred in many Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Hour- episodes.

Do you mean Deliverance (1972) with Jon Voight & Burt Reynolds?

Yes, that's the one. I've got that on DVD. Good movie, with one especially notorious scene.

Another notable scene: watch for when Burt Reynolds climbs a cliff face. That's not a stuntman, it's really Burt with no net.

And yes, this movie is so old it's Burt before the moustache.

Haha excellent! :)

I'll remember that scene, interesting that he wanted to do that.

I have seen a young Reynolds in a 1960 Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode. He'd never been in a film before that moment. The episode can be seen here @ YouTube).

Bill (played by Burt Reynolds) and Andy Davis are driving an old tanker truck across the desert when, 85 miles from their destination, the truck develops engine problems. A passing car gets stuck in the sand and it turns out the occupants have kidnapped a young woman in Phoenix and are on the run with the $100,000 ransom they've collected.....

From that last list, I think Rope of Sand is the only one I have seen ... really good cast and some good moments in the movie (Rains in particular).  I think this was a movie with a decent idea for a story, but the plot seemed forced to me.  Worth watching, IMO, but not great.

Thanks, bearfan! Sounds good enough for me. :)
We better not discuss (yet) why the plot seems forced but the plot summary itself surely sounds attractive (next to the cast).

Sometimes I get a bit picky with movies, In my mind, I tier them.
There are some great classic noir movies like the Maltese Falcon, etc that are in tier 1 (perhaps I will come up with a more extensive list), on the other hand, there are still movies that would be tier 4 or 5 that are still worth watching, ones that are so cheesy, they are still good.  For example, I watched the Forbidden Hollywood series set of DVDs that were pre-code movies and real risque because people said sex or women were shown in a bra, they were essentially 30s exploitation fims (some with big stars like Clark Gable, etc).  None of those movies were great, a few were good, but I am glad I saw them all, because even the worst of the lot was interesting.

To Sir, With Love is certainly considered a classic and rightly so, IMO.  A good movie, a little "preachy" for my tastes  (there aer good ways to get a message across without hitting you over the head with it), but still a good move and a really nice soundtrack IMO.
