Change some of the Maiden setlists

Welcome to a special double feature of Changing all of the 21st century tour setlists, based entirely on my own vibes and prejudices

Today, we're looking at the Final Frontier tour. Famously, the first leg of this tour was a menagerie of 2000s songs, some of which were being dusted off for the only time outside of their album tour. However (and unlike in 2003), I think the song selection could've been just a bit stronger:

Intro: Arthur's Farewell
1. The Wicker Man
2. Ghost of the Navigator
3. These Colours Don't Run
4. El Dorado
5. Dance of Death
6. Rainmaker
7. Brave New World
8. No More Lies
9. For the Greater Good of God
10. Blood Brothers
11. Fear of the Dark
12. Iron Maiden

13. The Number of the Beast
14. Hallowed be thy Name
15. Run to the Hills

Rainmaker replaces Wildest Dreams and RTTH replaces Running Free (straight upgrades), while Wrathchild and Breeg both get swallowed by Greater Good. Also just some slight re-ordering.

But then we get onto the 2011 setlist, as captured in the En Vivo! live album - memorable more for its performance quality than tracklist imo. As such, we can sprinkle a bit more 2010 magic onto the setlist:

Intro: Satellite 15
1. The Final Frontier
2. El Dorado
3. Two Minutes to Midnight
4. The Talisman
5. Coming Home
6. Dance of Death
7. Rainmaker
8. The Trooper
9. Brighter than a Thousand Suns
10. When the Wild Wind Blows
11. The Evil That Men Do
12. Fear of the Dark
13. Iron Maiden

14. The Wicker Man
15. Blood Brothers
16. Hallowed be thy Name

Getting rid of Running Free and TNOTB allows us to add in a song each from DoD and AMoLaD (by moving the BNW duo to the encore) - BTATS is an obvious inclusion when you pair it with the song about nuclear fallout, and Rainmaker is short enough to not blow out the toal runtime.

Nah, for me upgrading TFF leg 2 is finding room for “Isle of Avalon”. Maybe “The Alchemist” too.

Around the release of The Final Frontier I never particularly fancied to hear Isle of Avalon live, although I liked the song from the start. Looking back though, it might have been pretty nice live number with all that Smith & Harris groove and some neat little stage show effects, probably something similar to what Death of the Celts got on the Future Past tour.

Ehh for me neither of those two were really strong enough to muscle out BTATAS - I just couldn't resist pairing up Maiden's two nuke songs. If the Alchemist were shorter I'd have maybe picked it over Rainmaker

Anyway, time for some more Changing all of the 21st century tour setlists, based entirely on my own vibes and prejudices

Ahh, this old chestnut. Despite, like many people, feeling the setlist was pretty uninspired on this tour, I still go back and watch bit of the Rio 2013 show every once in a while - the stage props and lighting were spectacular, and the 12-minute version of Seventh Son went extremely hard with Bruce's old man voice. Massive shows in America, a return to Rock in Rio, and headlining Knebworth (with not one but two aeronautical capers) show us a band flying high commercially, while the then-unseen spectre of cancer hanging over Bruce adds a certain poignance looking back. Nonetheless, the setlist had ample room for improvement:

Maiden England 2012-13

1. Moonchild
2. Can I Play with Madness?
3. The Prisoner
4. Killers
5. Infinite Dreams
6. Heaven Can Wait

7. The Trooper
8. Number of the Beast
9. Stranger in a Strange Land
10. Wasted Years
11. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
12. The Clairvoyant
13. Fear of the Dark
14. Iron Maiden

15. The Evil that Men Do
16. Bring Your Daughter . . . To the Slaughter
17. Prowler

I always thought it was neat ending the show with prowler on the '82 and '83 tours, and the forced absence of Hallowed on this tour seemed like a good opportunity to re-use the trick (much better than Running Free if you ask me). In the past I would've used CSIT in the encores, but on reflection we can save that one for later; instead we can dust off BYD for a good ol' sing-along. SIT does still get some extra representation though - HCW is a no-brainer, while SIASL is obvious in other ways (land of ICE and SNOW, Steve). Finally Killers joins the Prisoner in the Maiden England alumni club.

Hang on, what's thiss?

Breaking news - press release from Rod:

Right, we're extending the bloody tour by another year. Janick's been bugging me about appearing one of these history documentaries and Steve has a load of these bloody Live at Donington DVD remasters lying around that we need to get rid of. We know none of you lot will stump up $180 to see Weekend Warrior or Fates Warning, so instead we're keeping the current tour going with some added 90s songs, which should get us through the whole bloody 90s history period as quickly as possible.

Steve adds: It's really great to bring the fans this Live at Donington remaster, especially after we sent Eddie round to Samuel Bayer's house to "recover" the original footage without any of his stupid slo-mo black-and-white bollocks. I think they'll really enjoy watching this concert without seeing song titles in fucking comic sans every 4-7 minutes.

Maiden England 2014

1. Moonchild
2. Be Quick or Be Dead
3. The Prisoner
4. Killers
5. Infinite Dreams

6. Afraid to Shoot Strangers
7. The Trooper
8. Number of the Beast
9. Stranger in a Strange Land
10. Wasted Years
11. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
12. The Clairvoyant
13. Fear of the Dark
14. Iron Maiden

15. The Evil that Men Do
16. Bring Your Daughter . . . To the Slaughter
17. Prowler

ATSS did go hard on the IRL tour, so this is a good way to bring it in without sacrificing Infinite Dreams. BQOBD comes in too, as an easy way to up the FOTD quotient. BYD hangs around, more relevant than before
