The Somewhere Back In Time and Maiden England tours are strange beasts to me. They represent eras of the band's history that, while close together, are very distinctive from one another, yet there's quite a bit of overlap in the setlists (nine songs by my count, excluding the two obvious staples and going off of the 2008 and 2012/13 sets) which leads to some odd clashes.

I don’t think they ever intended to do a Maiden England tour. They originally planned to release the Maiden England DVD in late 2008. That’s why they included a 5 SIT and SSOASS songs. The SBIT tour was supposed to represent Live After Death and Maiden England.

They obviously saw the success of the SBIT tour and decided to replicate it with the ME tour. That’s my theory anyway.

This isn’t a spoiler for the new LOTB leg’s setlist, but I’ll put it in spoiler tags regardless. This is how I would have combined the LOTB classics with the new material for a tour that can be in name ‘LOTB’ but in reality is a Senjutsu album tour.

As the lights begin to flash, we see a giant wall blocking our view of the stage. “Senjutsu” begins. “Beat the warning, the sound of the drums…” Once the band reaches the chorus, the wall falls apart and they emerge triumphantly through the ruins. They stage is decked out with throwbacks to classic Japanese architecture. This stays as the band moves into “Stratego” and from there into “The Writing on the Wall”. Bruce comes from the scaffolding on a motorcycle looking like the reaper just for shits and giggles.

Then the stage goes black before the revving of airplane engines announces “Churchill’s Speech” and “Aces High” comes in with a bang, complete with Spitfire. Afterwards comes “The Trooper”, and Bruce and Trooper Eddie get to battle it out onstage. Then things go dark again and now we’re ushered into the cathedral for “Revelations”.

Bruce keeps the cloak from the previous song for “The Parchment”. During this track, Samurai Eddie makes his grand appearance. “Days of Future Past” rips a whole in the crowd next before we get a mixture of the cathedral and the war stage for “Hell on Earth”. Both Trooper and Samurai Eddies come back out and we also have the cross from “Sign of the Cross” present. Thereafter it’s “Flight of Icarus”, of course.

A trio of classics now: “Fear of the Dark”, “The Number of the Beast”, and “Iron Maiden”. For the encore, the band has set up a model time machine on stage that Bruce emerges from for, duh, “The Time Machine”. And we close out the show just as we did on the first two legs, with “Hallowed Be Thy Name” and “Run to the Hills”.

I think this is a great compromise between continuing LOTB and doing an album tour. You’ve got the classics and the epic stage setup from LOTB, and you’ve got the new songs from Senjutsu. Could’ve been cool.
