Black Metal

Very melodic black metal with lots of orchestral stuff + lots of clean vocals. Pretty interesting IMO.

Just seen Abbath has been announced for Damnation Festival, a one-day indoor festival in Leeds which mostly specialises in extreme metal. I feel I should really make the effort to get to it one of these days.

Damnation Festival? Organized by Abbath?

Not organised by, no. It's a festival that's been running for a few years, I've just never been to it.

Why? or no one that you know you mean? Would be a shame if people didn't back this up. For a one day festival it's a strong lineup.

Oh, it has a lot of support, just nobody I know would go. It used to be a bigger festival, I think it was a two-dayer at one time in Manchester, which is a more metal-friendly patch in general. The organisation doesn't seem terribly good, though. I've never had any publicity material from them. I found out about it by accident when Katatonia publicised their appearance there a few years ago.

It seems to have a lot in common with some of the festivals we have here as well. They're basically driven by fans for fans and local metal organizations who try and bring more bands to the area and try to highlight the underground bands. We have a three day festival close to me called Aalborg Metal Festival that is driven the same way....and unless you're aware of the festival and metal news in general you probably won't see an add or anything from them...but make no mistake it's a big thing in the metal community here. They could do better at reaching out though for sure...

I just looked at the past bands at the damnation festival and I see some similarities...some of the same bands probably toured across Europe at the time. At least I see many of the same bands we had at our Danish metal festivals :)

You can check some of the band history here:

That would make a lot of sense, it has slightly, er, amateurish qualities about the way it's organised. I might have to find £38 from somewhere. It's just a short train ride away.

Well, the grassroots way also has a charm of its own (that big band, one night, shows doesn't have) and hopefully by now they're better at organizing it. And most importantly, you're there for the music, which is usually pretty awesome at these events :)

My introduction to Satyricon. ..and the single before the album Nemesis Divina ( first album I heard from them) Classic much. From one of the best years of Black Metal, 1996. Pretty cheesy looking at it now, but still..Norwegian 90s goodness :p
