Re: BEST VOCALISTS EVER GAME! Final Round - DICKINSON vs. HALFORD

These are my two favourite singers so naturally I am very satisfied with this outcome.

Halford has the better range, and is the more complete singer. However, I also find it important to judge how these guys did live. So I decided to drag in the live performances. Even though Bruce isn't that fantastic during this tour, I still think he was "delivering the goods" better than Halford in the last two decades. But if we purely judge studio material, Halford might have won this (his studio work on all Priest and Halford live albums is fantastic :) ).

So Bruce is for me the best, my vote goes to Halford (and I'm still happy if Halford wins this contest :) ).

Agrees to whole post.

(If you said "live" albums by mistake, ignore my rant) Wtf dude? This is like, deja vu times seven.

Here we go again: Unleashed in the East. Rob had a flue of the magnitude that he shouldn't even have talked in his condition. There is a bootleg of the original recording, and... He could barely speakB

So they rerecorded the vocals - Live, mind you. Start to finish in one take. So the vocals are live, just not from the show. Besides, just go check the Red Hot Tokyo bootleg or just about any 70's bootleg for that matter.

Live Insurrection is a compilation of live tracks - The ones that have been fiddled with are marked as such (like the bonus tracks).  "The One You Love To Hate" vocals are from Rob's and Bruce's sound checks. It was never performed in front of an audience. Just sound checked.  Light Comes Out of Black also has a disclaimer that it's a studio track with some audience sound added, to "add to the mood" or whatever.

Besides. I've got tons upon tons of Halford/Priest bootlegs. Several from the Resurrection tour. Every single one of them could've ended up on Live Insurrection. No overdubbing needed.

Now, you wanna talk about post Resurrection live performances, it's a different thing. But don't come and say that you "love his overdubs". Not cool man. It's not fair. Just get the bootlegs yourself man and see for yourself.

Yeah, done ranting. It's just that we've been down this road like... Several times before.

Oh and just checking. By "all" you didn't mean to imply there's overdubbing on every live album, right?? Cause it's only Unleashed, and the overdubbing awas done live.

You know my take on Halford's Live "Studio" Insurrection (as explained in older rants) and indeed, there's also (done with reason or not) the most studio vocal album of all times: Unleashed in the East, still one of my favs to be honest.

I have heard the Rio gig. During a few songs, he had that nasal voice which is mysteriously not present at Studio Insurrection. I have also mentioned that at some point 3 guitars can be heard at the same time in one of these many too perfect sounding soundchecks (right!). Why do all those soundchecks and not play a single song of these live? That makes it less believable really.

Sorry man.

Every live album is indeed a bit exaggerated but since I believe he did it twice, I do not take all his other efforts for granted. The only one which sounds indisputable is the Memphis video. It sounds raw and real. Haven't checked the latest two live albums or so yet.

Halford. Again, Freddie should've won this. Greatest vocalist of all time as far as I'm concerned.

Only one that was soundchecked was "The One You Love". Except for that one and "Light Comes Out of Black", all other songs were played live during the tour. The HALFORD band changed the setlist around quite a bit during the tour. Live Insurrection is a compilation of the very best of the tour. The standard during the tour was set high though.

Which song can you hear three guitars in that's not the studio tracks?

The annoying high notes are a matter of taste, I guess. They are super clean, but I like them. They are present on the album too. Not as much as in RiR though.

Anyways. I highly doubt that Priest Live was dubbed in any way. Halford was on top of his game between Turbo tour and Ram it Down tour. Both the DVD, album and the St Louis soundboard testifies to that. I think the only one with a lot of dubbed vocals is Unleashed - And for good reason. Again, there are recordings of the original show and Rob could barely speak. Why put that on a record? I would've preferred that they'd record a totally new show but there's probably a reason why they didn't.

I just get upset when you imply he does it on every record. I think it puts him down and when there are plentiful of bootlegs that says otherwise (by the way, get the New Haven 1988 show for some surreal singing. The Sinner is beyond amazing), I react. We both have different opinions though, and that's fine I guess.   :)

Without getting deeper into the discussion -or rather: because we are the two biggest Priest fans of the board  :D-
can you direct me to a Halford bootleg website, or point out to me on which gigs -during this Resurrection tour- these following songs were played?

Light Comes Out of Black
Life in Black
Running Wild
Hell's Last Survivor
Sad Wings
Genocide
Beyond the Realms of Death
Black Out
Tyrant

I'd love to have more info on that and if possible hear them. Cheers.

As I said, Light Comes Out of Black wasn't played during the tour. It was during the Crucible tour though and it's on the Live in Anaheim cd if you want to check it. Most of the song is played in chest and lower headvoice though. Last verse and on is in the trademarked high scream voice.

Black Out is labeled as a bonus studio track too. Seem to recall that Hell's Last Survivor is labelled as such too - I can't check the booklet because I'm at my parents house during this summer.

Running Wild, Saviour, Riding On The Wind, Genocide and Tyrant were all played in Malmö nov 8 2000, along with most of the RiR songs.

Running Wild and Riding On The Wind were also played in Bremen.

I'll dig for Beyond the Realms of Death and Sad Wings tomorrow!

Edit: Drive was played in Florence, Italy!!!

Yeah, no Sad Wings so far. But as Drive was played, it's very possible it was played somewhere too. But Beyond the Realms was as you can see in these set lists. I'll scan for actual bootlegs tomorrow!

Re: BEST VOCALISTS EVER GAME! Final Round - DICKINSON vs. HALFORD

I've always thought Halford was awesome live, so is Bruce.

Re: BEST VOCALISTS EVER GAME! Final Round - BRUCE DICKINSON WINS!

TOP 10:

01. Bruce Dickinson (IRON MAIDEN) BEST MALE METAL CLEAN VOCALIST
02. Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST)
03. Ronnie James Dio (BLACK SABBATH, DIO, RAINBOW)
04. Freddie Mercury (QUEEN) BEST MALE ROCK VOCALIST
05. Michael Kiske (HELLOWEEN)
06. Matt Barlow (ICED EARTH)
07. Tim "Ripper" Owens (ICED EARTH, JUDAS PRIEST)
08. Ian Gillan (BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE)
09. Robert Plant (LED ZEPPELIN)
10. Roger Daltrey (THE WHO)

When the final round started, in just a few hours Halford was leading 5:1, but then Dickinson fans came and Bruce won 11:6 :edmetal:

Satisfied or not?

Re: BEST VOCALISTS EVER GAME! Final Round - BRUCE DICKINSON WINS!

Well, both yes and no.

They were a bunch of singers that should have entered the top 10.

Re: BEST VOCALISTS EVER GAME! Final Round - BRUCE DICKINSON WINS!

Pretty much yes.And I'm proud that I helped Ripper enter the top-10.

Agreed.

But from those two I pick Bruce. That's because I almost don't listen to Priest.

Indeed.

Overall, I am satisfied with the results (as the last poll question asks).  The top 4 was pretty much spot on, and the top 10 was defensible -- even though I'm not as big a fan of Kiske and Owens as others.  My only gripe is the omission of Sam Cooke and Pat Benatar from the poll, not only because they deserve to have been at least mentioned, but also because they should have rated in the top 10 or 15!  I have no illusions that a metal fan forum would have advanced either of them that far, but I encourage folks to check out Cooke in particular, who may have had the greatest male singing voice of all time (I already gave Pat Benatar her props earlier in this thread and elsewhere).  Fun poll, Night Prowler!

Re: BEST VOCALISTS EVER GAME! Final Round - BRUCE DICKINSON WINS!

My top 6 is exactly the same and this list is very good. %100 satisfied.

Re: BEST VOCALISTS EVER GAME! Final Round - BRUCE DICKINSON WINS!

I would have to say reasonably, but I voted no :)

Thanks for all the info Yax. It doesn't improve my impression much, unfortunately.
Hope you don't mind. The thing is:

All but the last three songs are labelled as live songs, since you hear audience.
They gave the wrong impression by using no less than five non-live played songs in the "live" part of this album:

Light Comes Out of Black
Life in Black
Hell's Last Survivor
Sad Wings
Black Out
