Saxon's ripoff 2 Minutes to Midnight riff (and the rest of the song) just do absolutely nothing for me. I am loathe to vote for King Mickey and His Spirit Halloween Gang, but his riffs are much better. No, wait, sorry, this is terrible. I can't get through Loa House without laughing. At least I can tune out Saxon.

Voting for Creeping Death just to even up the score and give as many points to both songs as possible. I still reject this match.

I don't care for the vocals by At The Gates at all. Some of my least favorite style of harsh vocals. Music is solid, but In Flames have far, far more interesting music and thankfully no vocals. Easy win for them.

Sleeping Sun might be the weirdest Nightwish song that could possibly appear in a "best metal song" tournament, but here we are. Ditto for Day Seven: Hope. I mean, what are we even doing here, @Azas? This is a 60s folk rock jig. I'm voting for Nightwish because at least it has a guitar solo? Both of these songs should be cut from the game and their points awarded equally to Holy Wars and Creeping Death.

Saxon benefits from not having King Diamonds vocals and it's a decent song but I found Loa House more interesting musically. Could have went either way.

Creeping Death cos just. Both songs absolutely piss all over everything else in the round. Often when listening to Megadeth I think these guys are better than Metallica, the groove, the technicality of the riffs while still being super listenable. But then I listen to Metallica and they just make me wanna rock the fuck out in a deeper way.

At The Gates did nothing for me. The other one was good.

Last pairing is utter nonsense. Same as MrK, I voted for the guitar solo.

I can already spoil this one, I'm voting for Holy Wars, regardless of the "keeping them tied" shenanigans. It's a much better song, imo.

Bloodletter is good Saxon and a little too long at 5:33. I'll be honest Loa House has already won in the first seconds, it's just more my sound. The production works better with King Diamond than what we had in In the Fire. It's also just the right length at 5:33.

The only way for me to ruin the day is to vote Creeping Death and day 7: hope Vaenyr lied, so let it be done. I also like it a lot more than Holy Wars, and Hetfield>Mustaine. Though I rate both songs very highly.

A tough match, two stellar songs from two albums I adore... Have you heard the solo in Cold though?

If it's on a metal album then it's metal, sorry. Especially if it's in the middle/end like these two songs. The real reason this is a bad match is because Sleeping Sun is infinitely better than Hope... Not like Hope is bad, the end of (all) Hope is a very cool moment and also more metal than the Sleeping Sun solo, just sayin'... , but even looking only at the numbers between 1 and 20, like 16 of them are better than 7 (and they're also better fits for this game). Meanwhile, Sleeping Sun is one of Nightwish's very best songs, and it's definitely better than, let's see, 1,4,5,6,8,9,10,13,14,15,17,18,19,20, and 7. That's at least 15 better than 7. The Human Equation doesn't even have 22 songs. Sorry, just emphasizing how much better Sleeping Sun is. Also the original version is better but whatever.

Yeah lol. Although to be clear I was joking. I disagree that any song on a metal album should count, but I’ve had that argument before and I know some people have a different view. Last time we were arguing about Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters”, which I don’t consider metal even if it does have a metallic solo.
 
I may be in the minority here, but I vastly prefer the 2005 version of “Sleeping Sun.” To me, it's the definitive version of the song. Tarja's singing is so much smoother and more natural - less caricaturically operatic, if you will. Tuomas obviously felt the song needed some serious refining, and I think he improved it tremendously.

As for Nothing Else Matters not being metal, I disagree. It's simply softer and aimed at a different audience. It can even serve as a gateway into the big and versatile world of metal itself.

Also, if Maiden's terrible* Wasting Love is metal, then Metallica's Nothing Else Matters definitely is.

In that case you don't even need to say you're joking, nobody would genuinely nominate that for any "best song" tourney in the first place. :ninja:

I didn't fully mean it either, there are songs that I connect more with their albums. Like, Hope is a track on a concept album and I don't listen to it out of context basically ever. I usually hear Sleeping Sun at the end of Oceanborn. If I tend to hear a song when I'm in a "metal headspace", there will be a stronger association of that song to metal, even if "musically" it's not warranted. But even then there are levels to it, both because some songs feel detached from the rest of the album, and because even among nonmetal songs, some songs are still closer to being metal than others. Sleeping Sun and Hope are closer than the Human Nature suite on both counts.

In actuality I was mostly taking the piss and don't regularly think of these songs as being metal, but they still come from a metal family and for some discussions that's good enough. Not for a game where we introduce potentially new metal songs to people though, I wouldn't nominate them. Also, NEM is metal, Dirge for November isn't.

I think I've only listened to about two or three songs of Saxon so far. Bloodletter pretty much sounds like what you'd expect when reading about Saxon. Pretty neat song, I really enjoyed the chorus. About a minute too long though.
Man, Loa House would've been an easy 9/10 if it were an instrumental. The vocals really drag it down. Gotta go with Saxon.

This one's easy for me. Holy Wars is a classic and from a time before Mustaine's vocals became a total joke. An insane amount of brilliant riffs throughout the entire song. The little acoustic interlude comes completely out of left field, but it leads perfectly into the next section, which is easily my favourite part of the song.
To be fair to Creeping Death, it features a lot of legendary riffs as well. It's one of the better Metallica songs. Though I prefer MOP/ANFA more. And I definitely like Holy Wars more.

Cold is a great song, especially the instrumental section. A shame it so quickly moves on from the best parts, like the far too brief riff right before the clean section. There are quite a few places where they could've added some really cool harmonies.
I gotta go with my pick though. At first I thought about including something from Whoracle, like Gyroscope, but settled on MMG. That pedal riff is incredibly fun to play on guitar. And the clean/acoustic sections regularly get stuck in my head.

This is the first time I'm hearing Sleeping Sun. It's... a song. Yup. Moondance or Ghost Love Score should've been here instead. This one bored me to tears.
Not gonna get into the "is it metal or not" discussion, but Hope (also listening to this one for the first time) is so much better than Sleeping Sun, it isn't even funny. It's not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but hey, at least it entertained me and didn't overstay its welcome. Even though it features LaBrie. Easy match up.

Also, huge kudos to @Siddharth! I like how you try to have similar songs go against each other and I really enjoy the trivia and fun facts you post.
