BEST BAND EVER: Results!

On the one hand, good to see Frost making it.
On the other, this same forum voted out Hellhammer who, with all due respect to Frost, is an obviously better drummer.

So it's Frost in the first pairing. Ariën definitely took drumming in Epica to another level when he joined, but Frost has a way more distinct style and also made a bigger impact on drumming in the genre he plays.

I was way more impressed by the guitar playing in the song for Bryan Mantia. Really nothing special from him. Whereas Richard Christy kicked ass wherever he played... maybe the least in Iced Earth actually. He was the best in Death and Control Denied.

Eliminated after Round 118:
Ariën Van Weesenbeek
Bryan "Brain" Mantia

Promoted after Round 118:
Frost
Richard Christy

Jeff Porcaro (TOTO)
vs.
Nick Menza (MEGADETH)

Gene Hoglan (DARK ANGEL, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD)
vs.
Van Williams (NEVERMORE)

First of all, Porcaro and Hoglan, definitely.

Second of all, why does the video for Beyond Within show the cover of Novembre, which are admittedly a much better band than Nevermore, but still are not Nevermore :D

First round is tough, like apples an oranges of the best kind. Second is Hoglan all the way

Jesus, literally only a few drummers I'm interested in, blinked and missed it. Also, Brain is a total groove drummer & you pick one of Buckethead's heaviest albums where it's debatable whether Brain is even playing drums on half of it. Most of the drumming is (I think) programmed by Dan Monti. So, nice song choice there, really representative...

Menza and Hoglan.

Always loved Menza’s playing. True it coincided with Mustaine’s best songwriting, but his parts are just so lively and powerful. I think of him as the thrash metal equivalent of Mike Portnoy.

I wasn't the one who picked the song, @Mosh did. Although, he did tell me to consult you... If you followed the thread, you could've posted something while he was still in the game :P

YouTube uploading algorithm fucks this up regularly. Like how Iced Earth's Horror Show has the cover of ICS Vortex's solo album.

Anyway, despite Jeff Porcaro recording gazillion other albums, I only really know him from Toto. I am very impressed by his playing here. Strong sound, nice fills and everything. However, he goes against thrash metal powerhouse that was Nick Menza. Menza wasn't the most technical drummer out there, but he had the power and feel that no one apart from maybe Lombardo had in thrash metal, and not many in metal altogether. He just made everyone who came after him sound weak, even guys like Dirk Verbeuren. He was just beating the shit out of those drums. Then you have guys like Shawn Drover playing those same drum aparts but with 0.1% of the power that Menza had. Sad!

Gene Hoglan is another powerhouse thrash metal drummer. Most of his career he was a bit overweight, so you would see that fat guy and think that he's just gonna ham it up Lars style, but he always had the speed and agility that younger and fitter drummers never had. Also, for a drummer it's also unusual that he was the main songwriter in a band (Dark Angel) and that he also played rhythm guitar in studio (also for Dark Angel). Kind of a waste that apart from Dark Angel he rarely contributed to songwriting afterwards. He did perform in bands like Death, Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Devin Townsend, Dethklok and is now playing for a smaller band called Testament.

Van Williams is a good drummer too, but nowhere near as good as Gene. He only really stands out on Dreaming Neon Black to me.
