Both great singers. I prefer Halfords voice. Performances on albums like Painkiller, Defenders of the Faith, British Steel and Sad Wings of Destiny, songs like Blood Red Skies, Beyond the Realms of Death... are the pinnacle of singing.

On top of that:

Halford it is, without a doubt. His music, his performance, his voice. Would never come on second place vs Dio.

Rob is is absolutely brilliant, but when push comes to shove there is no voice I’d rather listen to than Ronnie’s.

I’m with Foro on Dio for all the same reasons. Dio has incredible peaks as a vocalist but he also had a lot of low points and was just generally less consistent throughout the 80s and 90s. Halford evolved, reinvented himself several times, and maintained a level of consistency that, in Metal, is matched only by the vocalist who isn’t allowed in this game.

There is a case to be made, though, for the fact that Dio ended on a high note. He was doing great work with Sabbath and although his solo albums were less frequent, his last couple stand among his best work. There’s a very good chance that he is remembered more fondly than Halford because, frankly, the last decade has really not been kind to Halford. Dio died before he had the chance to soil his legacy.

Dio's prime simply has no match for me in the world of rock. Whatever issues with longevity he has are rendered negligible because of that incredible late 70s-early 80s prime.
